Gareth Scahill: Why can they not get the jobs?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Recruitment and Retention of Special Needs Assistants: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I thank the witnesses for attending and for giving their presentations this morning. I was going to follow up on something that Fórsa mentioned this morning about the workforce development plan, but the witnesses have already gone through the pillars on that. I am not going to get into the issue of individual schools, but if we in the Oireachtas send messages and queries to ncse.ie,...

Gareth Scahill: So is that two weeks or three weeks?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Recruitment and Retention of Special Needs Assistants: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: If we do not get it in that timeline, who do we contact?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Recruitment and Retention of Special Needs Assistants: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: Regarding the SNA review process, I have been contacted by a number of principals in a number of schools, and certain things I can figure out and I understand the logic about it, but one of the concerns is the unification and redeployment risk. One school principal stated: SNA allocations are now unified across mainstream and special classes, and this removes the protection autism class...

Gareth Scahill: Ms Walsh can respond in writing. That is all.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó (Atógáil) - Order of Business (Resumed) (30 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I, too, wish to be associated with the condolence messages that have been echoed in the Chamber today. Last week, in the Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence, we heard from the young people and youth representative bodies regarding AI and the impact on their lives. This morning, we also heard from representatives from the older bodies, people representing the older demographic. A...

Seanad: School Transport: Statements (30 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I thank the Minister of State for being here and I thank the Cathaoirleach for organising this discussion this evening. Like Senator Curley, I want to acknowledge the 178,000 students that are getting on buses every morning, the 8,200 buses, and the 10,600 routes in the system. The Minister of State said that no child should be left behind and it is great to hear that. The increase in...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Road Projects (1 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the Chamber. I welcome the students from St. Paul's College. I am sure the Cathaoirleach will make an announcement before they leave. I raise an issue that is very important in the area I am from, Castlerea in west Roscommon, which is to prioritise the upgrading of the N60 national road through Castlerea. With the imminent completion of the N5...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Road Projects (1 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: We know the money has been allocated for the N5. I take on board what the Minister of State said about engaging with the local authority. When the TII conversation came before the councillors, it was a matter of taking all or none of the safety measures. As a result of the lack of engagement on the ground, none of the measures was taken on board. However, the roads engineer in Roscommon...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Cancer Services (1 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Murnane O’Connor, to the House.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence and Children and Young People: Discussion (23 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I reiterate my thanks to all the speakers. Both the earlier session and this one have been very informative. The big thing I am getting from every representative body is education. That needs to form a part of everything we put into any report on this. I am not going back to Ms Daly specifically but, rather, to her organisation. On deepfakes, during the summer I was at a presentation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence and Children and Young People: Discussion (23 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: Mr. Church and Ms Keane also mentioned cyberbullying, stealing of images, blackmail and extortion. Earlier, Reuban Murray spoke about how one in three young people are now turning to AI companions. It was nice to hear Ms Keane emphasise empathy, creativity and judgment. These tools in their arsenal are too valuable to take out of human hands. That is going into a very worrying area in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence and Children and Young People: Discussion (23 Sep 2025)

Gareth Scahill: This is for Spunout, sorry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I thank the witnesses for coming before us. I am a former member of Roscommon County Council. In February 2025, Councillor Laurence Fallon put a motion to the chamber proposing that the council write to the Minister for Education and Youth requesting the introduction of extra time for students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties sitting second level examinations. There was a very...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: I will leave that for a few moments then. We have all bought into additional time. Following on from additional time, are there examples from other jurisdictions of things that would benefit our students in Ireland? What is the next phase after this?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Youth: Issues Affecting People with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia: Discussion (2 Oct 2025)

Gareth Scahill: There are things to learn from. I am very interested in hearing from Sive. We love hearing from younger people and getting their lived experience. To go back to what Ms Bissett said in relation to technology, is there consistency among schools or are some schools using better technology and better software to assist students? Is that something Dyslexia Ireland would hope to feed into?
