Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Working Group on Unification Referendums: Discussion (30 Mar 2021)

John McGahon: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. I have several questions regarding points 46 to 50 in the executive summary of the report, regarding campaign conduct rules. This morning we had representatives from Facebook and Twitter before the Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to talk about the digital side of campaigning, including political advertisements, etc....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: ^ General Scheme of Electoral Reform Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Mar 2021)

John McGahon: Thank you, Chairman, for allowing me to attend and join in, as I am not a member of the committee. The reason I am here today is that I have taken a great interest in transparency on these platforms since my election to the Oireachtas. I wish to follow up on what my colleague, Senator Seery Kearney, said. With all due respect to Mr. Costello, under no circumstances do I accept the accept...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: ^ General Scheme of Electoral Reform Bill 2020: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Mar 2021)

John McGahon: What are the witnesses doing to reduce the horrific abuse that is doled out on their platforms to politicians, journalists and members of civic society? They have said that they regulate anonymous accounts in the same way as they do other accounts. It is far too slow. The platforms have failed to regulate themselves and now governments need to do it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee
The Proposal Initiative: Discussion
(14 Apr 2021)

John McGahon: It was great to hear from Neil McCann. He probably does not remember it but we met in 1999 at a count centre in Dundalk when I was a young child. It was nice to hear him mention his late father, someone who did tremendous work for business in County Louth. I know we are approaching the ten-year anniversary of his death in the coming months. It is nice to meet Neil again all these years...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Covid-19 Pandemic (26 Apr 2021)

John McGahon: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House today. Some 20,000 people in Ireland have type 1 diabetes. The latest data from across the globe show and the HSE advice states that people with diabetes face much worse outcomes if they contract Covid-19. The HSE has advised diabetes patients at all stages to try to avoid GP practices and avoid hospitals where they can. However,...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Covid-19 Pandemic (26 Apr 2021)

John McGahon: I thank the Minister of State. I have a couple of asks which I would like the Minister of State to come back to me on in his written response. The first ask is the development of a virtual consultation service. We have seen from the Covid-19 crisis that virtual and online services make sense. Prior to Covid-19 it was more difficult to make that happen, but it makes sense now and we should...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Apr 2021)

John McGahon: I was coming down here today to talk about a different issue, was looking at my Instagram and saw a post from Kasper Schmeichel, whose father was one of my idols growing up. His Instagram is in a social media blackout from 3 p.m. today until Monday night. I did not realise this was happening, perhaps because here in Ireland I am slightly removed from it. It is a social media blackout that...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Renewable Energy Generation (7 May 2021)

John McGahon: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House to take this Commencement matter. I raise it because the idea and commitments on this issue in the programme for Government are excellent. If we can imagine it in layman's terms, it is the concept of people being able to put solar panels on their homes and businesses and farmers being able to diversify into this area by using some of...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Renewable Energy Generation (7 May 2021)

John McGahon: That is an excellent, detailed response, which I was hoping the Minister of State would bring to the House. I thank him. It is good to see that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is going to review the existing planning exemptions for rooftop solar panels and that it will be brought before the Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage in the next couple...

Seanad: European Digital Green Certificate: Statements (7 May 2021)

John McGahon: This was something I was mulling over in my head as I was coming down today. I was wondering what I would and would not say. I did not know what I would say before I came in so I sat here and listened to the debate. I thought I would make my remarks off that. Senator Buttimer last comment was that we are back and open. Straight away that hit me. I agree absolutely and take the view...
