- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I welcome everybody and we all accept the integrity of everyone here. There seems to be a major problem. The one theme that runs through all of the reports by the organisations is that they all have a major problem with the HSI. I am a bit confused when Mr. Corrigan says there is an interim board set up. How can an interim board change a constitution? How can that be done?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: As a limited company I presume it would have a memorandum of association. Has Mr. Corrigan looked at that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: There are a lot of problems here between passports and insurance, as Mr. Corrigan mentioned. What is the position on that in the industry at the moment?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: As I said at the start, there seems to be a huge lack of communication across all disciplines. I ask all the witnesses what they see as the solution to this problem. There is obviously a major problem out there and nobody wants to see the industry going down. The picture being painted at the moment is that the industry is in dire trouble.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: What is the solution? That is what we are asking.
- Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Second Stage (8 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: Sinn Féin agrees with this Bill and recognises the urgency to make necessary changes to fully register all approved housing bodies, which account for approximately 61,000 dwellings, either owned, leased or managed by AHBs throughout the country. We see AHBs as an important cog in the supply of cost-rental and affordable homes, particularly for the homeless, elderly citizens and for both...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I welcome the witnesses. I do not think we are really getting the message across. The fact is the profits of the industry have dropped by 83% this year alone. As Deputies Collins and Mac Lochlainn stated with regard to the inshore fishermen, the shellfish and crab industry has fallen through the roof. Fishermen are under fierce pressure. Processing plants are closing down around the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: On the issue of non-EU vessels in EU waters, as far as I am aware Norway, the Faroe Islands and Iceland do not have any quotas but their vessels catch as much as they can. Is that correct?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: Is the UK receiving payments to allow other countries to fish in its waters?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I have one more question about something that is puzzling me. We relied on Britain for much of our scientific data. British scientists were very good at producing it. Do they still share the data or is it no longer available to us?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: Regarding the integrated hub, the industry is asking for a dedicated official in Europe through whom it can have direct contact with the EU committee, operating as a liaison officer as such. Is it possible for the Minister to arrange that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I have been asked to inquire into the €13.4 million that was allocated in the budget to the seafood processing industry. Was that part of a new programme or a reference to an older scheme that closed in 2023?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: That is okay.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Impacting the Fisheries Sector and Aquaculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I thank Ms McSherry.
- Planning and Development (An Taisce) Bill 2024: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I thank the Rural Independent Group for bringing this important topic to the floor of the House. Over the past few years, we have seen vast changes in rural Ireland, including the closing of small post offices and rural Garda stations. An array of bureaucratic rules and regulations foisted on our farming communities are taking their toll. There is not a parish in my constituency that has...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (10 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: I was contacted last night by some concerned staff at Wexford General Hospital. They were told by a senior member of staff that their seasonal flu vaccines and Covid vaccines would not be provided to them in their workplace due to a funding issue. As the Tánaiste knows, this is a preventive measure for the health and safety of workers who are at high risk and it also limits the rate of...
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Service Executive (10 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: 261. To ask the Minister for Health the number of properties and specific locations that are vacant, and in the possession and control of the HSE; the number of such properties in County Wexford; and the number at various stages of disposal, in tabular form. [40745/24]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: Much has been said here. The crux of the thing is that when fishers see non-EU countries setting unilateral TACs; it is really galling. They see the likes of Norway which increased its mackerel quota by 55% over its quota. The Faroe Islands were much the same. On the back of this, there are dozens of new pelagic vessels coming on board which are 80 m in length and are very serious...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: There is little mention in the report of scallops, which are very unique to Wexford Harbour. The shellfish industry has fallen through the floor in the past two years or more. Lobsters have gone down, as has everything else, and people are under pressure. Regarding BIM's figures on employment impact by county, will that involve skippers? Is there a breakdown of the employment that will be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2024: Motion (16 Oct 2024)
Johnny Mythen: Most of what I was going to say has been asked. It is one of the few industries that really resonates with rural Ireland. I come from the small town of Enniscorthy, where I think we have our greyhound track since 1937. It creates a lot of employment. It is very important. When people look at the greyhound industry, they do not see the veterinary sector that is tied into it. You have...
