Public Accounts Committee: Environmental Protection Agency: Financial Statements 2017 (18 Apr 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Obviously, the corporate culture of the companies being examined will be important in determining what kind of a bond will be required. There is a company in my area that one can be sure will do everything by the book. If there is a criticism, one hears it often goes over the top, which I much prefer. Let us consider circumstances where there is a changing environment. For example,...

Catherine Murphy: The agency has mapped the areas of the country most at risk, but the issue is not exclusive to those areas. My area is not one of the high-risk areas, but I am aware of houses in the area where high radon levels have been detected. I think it is easy enough to test for.

Catherine Murphy: The agency carried out public opinion polls, in respect of which it is stated in the briefing that more than one third of adults, 37%, recognise climate change as the most pressing issue facing the country and that for 61% it is among the top three concerns. There is a public understanding of the issue. Does that public awareness cause the agency to focus differently on where it directs its...

Catherine Murphy: I thank Ms Burke for her responses.

Gnó na Dála - Business of Dáil (8 May 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I agree with the points made. Often we end up with an announcement of something that has already happened and we take a retrospective look at it. We have an obligation to inform ourselves in advance on this occasion. I too believe it is a cynical move to dump this information at this point in the day when it is known that Leaders' Questions are due to take place. The timing of the...
