Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Statement of Strategy 2018-2021: Engagement with the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation (19 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: The announcement of 1,000 new jobs at Amazon yesterday was fantastic. It is brilliant to see those high-tech jobs coming to Ireland, but my immediate reaction was to wonder where these employees will live. I listened to a vox pop on Radio 1 yesterday where people who were looking for housing were interviewed on the streets of Dublin. The Amazon jobs announcement was mentioned, and one of...

United States Immigration Policy: Motion (20 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I welcome the opportunity to speak in favour of this all-party motion. I will begin with a quote from Robert F. Kennedy:The United States was born in revolution and nurtured by struggle. Throughout our history, the American people have befriended and supported all those who seek independence and a better way of life. If he were alive to see the America of today, he would find it far beyond...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: HIQA Report: Engagement with Tusla (20 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I thank the Tusla representatives for appearing before the committee to talk to us and take questions. Tusla is dealing with many legacy issues. This is affecting the reputation of the organisation. It is incumbent on Tusla officials to address that. Tusla is sometimes unfairly talked about or hammered for cases that arose before the organisation came into being. Tusla has to deal with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: HIQA Report: Engagement with Tusla (20 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I wish to make a point of clarification. Are Tusla social workers operating with caseloads beyond a level that the agency officials consider to be safe?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: HIQA Report: Engagement with Tusla (20 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I am conscious that I am out of time. What has this year's allocation of €40 million been spent on? How much of the money was spent on creative community alternatives? How much of the money will be used to source administrative staff? Is a lack of funding preventing progress from being made?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: HIQA Report: Engagement with Tusla (20 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I ask the Minister to outline the preparations being made with the UK to maintain the common travel area and all associated reciprocal rights and if he will outline what conversations and discussions he has had with the UK in that regard, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Common Travel Area (27 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: As the Tánaiste outlined, the common travel area, CTA, allows free movement of British and Irish citizens between the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and provides access to various government services in each country in terms of healthcare, education and voting rights in certain elections. We welcome the fact that there has been agreement from all...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Common Travel Area (27 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I note from a parliamentary question tabled by my colleague, Deputy O’Dea, that the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Deputy Regina Doherty, met the UK Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, the Right Honourable Esther McVey, on Monday, 23 April 2018. The Minister stated that she has a broad agreement to preserve the status quoin the field of social security...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Brexit Issues (27 Jun 2018)

Lisa Chambers: I was concerned by the Tánaiste's statement that he wanted to see a backstop start to take shape. We were told that the backstop was already in place. While Prime Minister May has said that the UK has a responsibility to help find a solution, that is far from a commitment to delivering a solution.
