Denis O'Donovan: I acknowledge the confusion created when I put the question while in the Chair. Like a pause for prayer, a few seconds passed before anyone indicated a desire to speak. I never envisaged that 12 or 13 Senators wanted to contribute on this issue, but that is their entitlement. I ask the Acting Chairman to use his discretion to put the question again. It would be the fairest way to proceed....

I knew him well as a councillor and met him at several ard-fheiseanna. I did not serve with him; he finished his service here in 1989 and I came into the Seanad later that year. As has been said, he was quite a character with a great sense of humour and turn of wit....
