Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: I want to start by referring to two sets of figures that were released today, the first of which are the detailed census figures, which have been released by the CSO. There are a number of interesting figures in that. There is the fact that in the final figures, the population of the country is 25,000 more than it was estimated. The provisional census - and colleagues in this House may be...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: I welcome the announcement by the Minister for Health, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, that he is going to proceed with legislation that will prohibit the sale of vapes and vaping products to anybody under the age of 18. While I understand that there is a bit of a pause waiting for agreement at European level on some of the issues around plain packaging and so on, Ireland should become a lead in...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: I thank the witnesses for attending. It is appropriate that we thank local authorities for all the work they do in the arts. It is about not just the funding, which is important, but also the supportive staff and the networking that is done. I certainly see it in Wexford, where I am based. We have got advice from Waterford City and County Council, which has worked on the Waterford Walls...

Malcolm Byrne: Could we do more of that? Are there any particular groups that the Waterford or other arts offices are finding it difficult to target? From a policy perspective, what can we do to help?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: I thank the witnesses again for all they do. In Wexford, a number of pieces of musical composition were funded from the Per Cent for Art scheme. I am thinking about the reports and recommendations we have discussed. Are there any policy levers we could look at in regard to the Per Cent for Art scheme? I acknowledge there have been changes and other measures introduced. There are lots of...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: I thank our guests for their testimony and for all of their work, which is important. I want to talk specifically about the Walls Project. I am from Gorey in Wexford and the Walls Project did two amazing pieces there, including a collaboration with Gorey Little Theatre, a voluntary theatre with which I am involved. One of the best aspects of that was the consultation process. It was...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: In the context of the committee's recommendation, it might be useful. I agree. Community and voluntary arts organisations that have come before the committee have all spoken about sustainability. I like Mr. Kelly's thought about organisations being able to think about what they will do in 50 or 100 years.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Jun 2023)

Malcolm Byrne: Gorey Musical Society is my hometown musical society. It has had a number of successes over the years and has won a number of awards. We should recognise musical societies all over the country for the contribution they make. It was also appropriate that the winner of the best musical director award was Fintan Cleary of the Wexford Light Opera Society. Mr. Cleary sadly passed away since...
