Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: I thank our guests for being here. We have spoken an awful lot about the governance of CAMHS in south Kerry. I want to touch on probably the most important people, who are the children. I travelled to Tralee a few weeks ago and met parents and their children on the issues in south Kerry. Their stories are absolutely heartbreaking. I am going to relay one of them in as generic a fashion...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: I am sorry to cut across Mr. Fitzgerald. I know that we cannot speak about individual cases which was why my question was as general as possible. In a number of cases, parents and children feel that they were left out of the review process and that their personal testimonies were not taken on board. Are there any plans to go back and rectify this so that the voices of these children and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: Would Dr. Burke accept that in some cases in CAMHS in Kerry, medication was considered in isolation and was seen as the only treatment available? It was the only treatment that was being given to children.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: In a number of cases, medication was inappropriately prescribed to children. Psychological supports were not made available in tandem with medication and yet the parents of the child to whom I referred earlier received a letter to say no harm was done the child. Something is not adding up here in terms of the letters that were sent to families and the treatment children received.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: Yes, but it was said earlier that it should never have happened without psychological supports also being put in place. In this particular case and in several other cases in Kerry, that just did not happen.

International Women's Day: Statements (8 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: I am delighted to have this opportunity to speak on International Women's Day. Last week I was invited by students from Lucan Community College to hear their presentation on how church and State relations continue to affect women's rights in Ireland. Taking on board what Deputy Richmond was saying, we have an obligation in this House to encourage all young people to get involved. I said...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Mental Health Services (8 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: I thank the Minister of State for staying until 11 p.m. on a Tuesday evening. It is much appreciated. I am going to bring him on a bit of a journey. I worked in front-line addiction services for a number of years prior to becoming involved in politics. I am going to talk about the case of a young mother who sought help for chronic addiction, but it could be anybody. She entered the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Mental Health Services (8 Mar 2022)

Mark Ward: As I stated, the continuum of care is so important. If there are gaps in services, vulnerable people will fall through those gaps. One of the best decisions the HSE made several years ago was to make Cuan Dara to Keltoi a door-to-door service. Before that, people leaving the detox centre at Cuan Dara may have had to wait six or eight weeks before getting into Keltoi. The HSE closed that...
