Covid-19 (Health): Statements (13 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: As the Taoiseach rightly said earlier, it is our duty to hold ourselves to account. The Government should up its game, get with the programme, have some tangible goals and start doing side deals, just like the Germans and everybody else. If the Germans can get it, I want it for the people of Ireland too.

Covid-19 (Health): Statements and Questions and Answers (13 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: Has the Minister, the Taoiseach or anybody on behalf of the State been in contact with the CEOs of Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson to acquire supplies additional to those being delivered via the EU scheme?

Covid-19 (Health): Statements and Questions and Answers (13 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I will take that as a "No". The Minister indicated that there was contact at the appropriate level but then went on to say that the EU is doing a great job and we will be doing well. Earlier, he stated that there will be 50,000 vaccinations a week. If that is the limit we are tied to then, as I said earlier, it will take us two years to inoculate everyone. I respectfully suggest that the...

Covid-19 (Health): Statements and Questions and Answers (13 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I propose a very small amendment to the Order of Business to permit the Minister of the day to answer a question. I am sure we will get a seconder.

Covid-19 (Education): Statements (14 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: Like the previous speaker, I will use my time to put a few matters on record. I can liaise with the Minister at a later date. She knows better than me that young people have suffered disproportionately throughout the Covid crisis. Everybody has suffered and it is difficult for everybody, but I believe young people, both primary and secondary school pupils, have suffered a great deal and...

Covid-19 (Higher Education): Statements (14 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I am aware that everything is very much underpinned by Covid at the moment but I did have an opportunity twice yesterday on that matter and earlier on secondary education. It is not that I am neglecting that as a most important matter but as this is statements on higher education, I want to focus specifically on the higher education area and on our plans as a State for the north west. Both...

Report of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I thank the Acting Chairman and the Ministers for the opportunity to say few words on the report of last week as this is my first opportunity to do so. I agree with many colleagues in the many excellent points that have been made, none more so than Deputy Connolly, who hit the nail on the head for me on this issue. I will make some points generally about the report towards the end of my...

Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Covid-19 Pandemic Supports (20 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: 31. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if he will review the legislation with regard to employers who had to cease trading and let their staff go due to Covid-19, repaying statutory redundancy payments paid to their former employees, given that these employers have already paid their portion of the employee social insurance contribution over the years and the fact that...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Revenue Commissioners (20 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: 147. To ask the Minister for Finance if clarity will be provided on the benefit-in-kind treatment for tax purposes for company cars for 2021; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2516/21]

Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Statements (21 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: To use my time efficiently, I just want to make a statement and a few points. The Minister can use other time to respond to me or he can write to me. I do not want him to eat into Deputy Lawless's time by answering me. As I said last week, it is crystal clear to me that we did not prepare adequately. This is borne out by the fact that senior consultants in the Coombe Women's Hospital...

Brexit (Foreign Affairs): Statements (21 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I do not wish the Minister to respond to me, because I want to use my time to put a few points on the record. I ask that he take the points on board and, if he feels the needs to respond, he might do so in writing at a later time. I was involved in the export business for many years. I am glad I am not involved in it now. I would respectfully suggest that until such time as we get...

Brexit (Foreign Affairs): Statements (21 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I am concluding. In case we are worried about being poor Europeans, I would point out that when Angela Merkel said in January, "We don't want national solo runs and think the most effective protection for us can be reached with a European approach.", none of us knew that she had her own little side deal already done for the German people. While being good Europeans, let us also put the...

[3031/21]

Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 (Covid Restrictions Support Scheme) (Percentage Adjustment) Order 2021: Motion (27 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I wish to share time with Deputy Pádraig O'Sullivan. I thank the Minister and the Minister of State, Deputy Fleming, for being here to listen to my plea. I very much support today's resolution and the CRSS, but I have to use my time to point out an anomaly with it. Before I do that, I would like to day the Government is extremely well-placed to adjust and increase supports, given,...

Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (27 Jan 2021)

Marc MacSharry: I thank the Minister of State for the attending. This legislation is on the back of a directive and there is not much to disagree with in it. I want to use of the time available to make a few points, however. First, with regard to the transposition of directives, previous Deputies have said there is form here on waiting until the last minute of the last hour of the last day, which does...
