- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 17 Senators who contributed to the Order of Business this morning. I join with Senator Mark Daly in wishing our colleague and friend, Senator Ardagh, and her future husband every success, joy and happiness tomorrow. I hope the Child of Prague is out because the rain this morning certainly would not help. Senator Ardagh did order me on Tuesday not to mention it but Senator Daly...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I would refer Senator Gavan to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions which held hearings and heard from witnesses during the last Oireachtas. I might be wrong but I think Deputy Tóibín chaired the committee, although it might have been Senator Mac Lochlainn. I cannot remember. It was one or the other. I think Senator Mac Lochlainn chaired it....
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I do not agree with the Senator about that. Senator Grace O'Sullivan raised the issue of CETA. I would be happy to invite the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation to the House to address the points made by the Senator. Senator Humphreys raised the issue of the payment of social welfare. He referenced savings of €28 million. For the first time, this Government was clear....

Jerry Buttimer: As a consequence of the budget, 840,000 people will benefit.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I accept that but I am replying on the Order of Business. Up to 840,000 people will benefit from the social welfare increases in the budget. It is important we welcome that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: It will be in March. They will be introduced either in the finance or the social welfare Bill. What Senators should welcome and focus on is the fact all people on social protection will receive an increase of €5. This will restore and uplift the fortunes of people.

Jerry Buttimer: At the risk of rising to Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile's heckling-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)

- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: They cannot have it both ways.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I will rise above the heckling. Senator Kevin Humphreys made an important point on keeping focus on our climate change obligations. I have no difficulty in having the Minister come to the House on the matter. However, I do not think we will get the reports or speeches two weeks in advance.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: Senators Ray Butler and Frank Feighan raised the issue of Aleppo. I would be happy to have the Minister come to the House on this matter. It is important we put pressure on Russia and the United States to find a resolution to this. It is important we see both powers not scoring political points because people are being killed there while the survivors have nothing to look forward to in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: The Minister is committed to the language. Both Senators Michelle Mulherin and Colm Burke replied to Senator David Norris's remarks. I would be happy to have that discussion about the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act 2013 with the Minister.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Michelle Mulherin raised the issue of slurry spreading. There are several issues linked to that such as animal welfare and environmental impact. I hope the Minister will look at giving that derogation. Senator Ned O'Sullivan raised the issue of rural and regional town councils. A review of these is taking place. He is stretching it a small bit when he blames the abolition of town...

- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I join with Senators who have raised the very sad and untimely death of Anthony Foley. To those of us from the sporting world and from Munster, he was an iconic figure. He was an ambassador for sport. He was a loving husband to Olive, a loving father to his two children, a proud son to Brendan and Sheila and a proud brother to his sisters. On my own behalf and on behalf of all of us here,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Colm Burke has been active in trying to ensure we have Members of this House on that committee. It is critical that we do, not least because we have medical and health expertise on all sides of the House and across a variety of spectrums of the health service, which can bring added value to that committee. I hope Fianna Fáil will work with us, and that na Seanadoirí ó...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: Rather than bemoaning the fact pre-legislative scrutiny is in situ, we should welcome it because it makes legislation better and allows for a better and more participative journey of Bills. Nonetheless, it is a source of concern. The other point I would make, and I am not accusing Senator Daly of this, is that those who oppose Government at every opportunity should reflect on what is new...

Jerry Buttimer: I am not referring to Senator Daly-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2016)
Jerry Buttimer: I am not referring to Senator Daly at all. If we are to be mature about new politics, Senators need to change their mantra and stop coming in here every day opposing, and giving out about, everything. I am not referring to Senator Daly in particular but am speaking in a broader sense.
