Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: How will Mr. O'Connor know whether he can pay his bills if he does not know the pay?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: That I sit here and listen to him not answer a single question? I will do that all right. Some things never change, do they?

Electricity Infrastructure: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: The consultation process began yesterday at the committee meeting when John O'Connor, the incoming chairman of EirGrid, was asked if he would live beside a pylon. He said he would not like to live close to a pylon and asked who would. That started the consultation process because there has not been a consultation process, especially in the area in which I live, where 10,000 leaflets...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Mr Slye should watch it. Believe me, it is very important. It is vital.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Yesterday the incoming chairman of EirGrid said he would not want to live beside a pylon and asked who would. We did not get an answer from him on how close is close. He said "maybe" 50 metres. "Maybe" is not the best word to use when trying to reassure someone. I advise Mr. Slye to read the Official Report of yesterday’s proceedings. I am disappointed that he has not already done...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: My point was that surely a decision should be made to as to whether a project will be underground or overground before the route is chosen. EirGrid, having chosen its route, is now saying it is three times more expensive to go that route. That does not seem to be a logical approach.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: When it has been established that overhead is appropriate, surely comparisons with underground on the basis of price do not really mean anything. As such, why were they given?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: What then is the basis of the comparison? It would be three times more expensive than what?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Today.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Mr. Slye is from a different communication school than the witness from whom we heard yesterday. Mr. Slye has agreed with nearly everything everybody has said today and seems to love listening to us.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: I asked about indemnity.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Yes, in reference to the potential harms that might be caused to the population. Does Mr. Slye not remember that question?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: It is rather a significant question to forget though - indemnifying people against health concerns.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Is that equal to providing indemnification?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: The answer then is "No", EirGrid will not indemnify the Irish public. It would have been much quicker if Mr. Slye had just said "No" in response to my question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: The answer is "No"; that is the bottom line. Is it so astonishing to ask for a straight answer?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: I now find myself supporting the appointment of the chairman designate, because he is the only man who seems to tell us the truth. As he said, he would not live beside one of these pylons in 1 million years. His appointment is looking better all the time as this discussion goes on.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Okay. It is a quick question. Mr. Slye said the distance was 50 m. The pylon might be 50 m away but the line itself might be only 30 m away. Is it the case that could happen? How was the distance of 50 m arrived at? What is wrong with 51 m or 49 m?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: Why?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Luke Flanagan: EirGrid tries to do that.
