Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: As the Equality Authority and the HSE have designated next week a week for discussion on new approaches to aging and ageism I call on the Leader to allow a debate on the issues. At the end of May I will produce a policy document in which I will put forward nine propositions and I am confident it will be as successful as my policy document last year on a new approach to child care.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: Last night the Taoiseach condemned the murder of Michael McIlveen, a 15 year old boy, in Ballymena on Saturday night as evil sectarianism and said it was a reminder of the shocking bigotry that exists in the North. We need an immediate discussion on the North as we approach the marching season. A relative of mine teaches in a school in Ballymena and told me that young people in Roman Catholic...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: Is the Leader sure it was IanPaisley senior?

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 May 2006)

Mary White: The top gardaí are political appointments.

Seanad: Migration Report: Statements. (11 May 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister and compliment him on the tremendous work he is doing in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The recent increase in carer's leave to two years is a tremendous support to people who are caring for those who suffer from long-term illness. They can now be off work for two years and are guaranteed that they will get their job back after that time. Neither do...

Seanad: Migration Report: Statements. (11 May 2006)

Mary White: I thank Senator Bradford for the courtesy. I went into the salon and there were four Irish girls behind the counter who told me the salon was closed. I said I wanted to make an appointment but they said they had nothing available until next week. This was Wednesday night. We all know that foreign people working in shops, or the service industry generally, cannot wait to pack the bags properly...

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 May 2006)

Mary White: I call for an urgent debate on care options for older people following the report in today's edition of The Irish Times that a consultant recommends that families be charged the full cost of caring for their elderly relatives in acute hospital beds in circumstances where those families have blocked their discharge from hospital. The reality is that families often cannot afford to pay for the...

Seanad: Waste Management: Statements. (17 May 2006)

Mary White: One minute Senator Phelan is in favour of incineration, the next he is against it.

Seanad: Waste Management: Statements. (17 May 2006)

Mary White: I compliment the Minister of State on his first class contribution which I will file away and use as a source of information on the great progress made in waste management. I refer to two words in the Minister of State's contribution, that is, "consensus" and "planning", which are critical. I draw attention to the proposed incinerator on the Poolbeg Peninsula in Dublin. I have spoken to the...

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements. (17 May 2006)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank the Leader, Senator O'Rourke, for facilitating this debate during Say No To Ageism week. I am sure the Minister of State will agree this has been has been one of the most interesting debates to have been held in this House. Every speaker has pushed out the boat and we are all agreed that a new approach to ageing is needed. The Equality...

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: It appears that bar owners fear that well-mannered and respected older people will not fit in with younger clients, some of whom, as reports indicate, drink too much and become involved in anti-social behaviour. If an older person does not look the part in a sexy, jazzy bar, he or she is not allowed to enter.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: Senator O'Rourke is here to learn new matters. Negative stereotyping is out of step with reality. Attending a meeting of the Joint Committee on Social and Family Affairs last February, the chair of the National Economic and Social Forum, Dr. Maureen Gaffney, stated: Not only is our view of old age increasingly out of synch with the capabilities of older people, but we now know from...

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: I recommend all Senators read this. It is fantastic. To return to what Senator Quinn said, in my document I will have approximately 19 propositions on which the Government should deliver. The first deals with mandatory retirement.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: It is worthwhile. We have to get it all in.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: For God's sake the Leas-Chathaoirleach must listen. I must get it on the record. We are trying to create a revolution in society. We are all getting older and want to be feted, looked after and appreciated. Civil servants who entered the public service before April 2004 are forced to retire at the age of 65 regardless of their wishes. I have had approximately six public meetings in the Dublin...

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: I am not going to tell the House all my recommendations. Senator Bradford must be joking. I am sweating blood and tears over my document so I am not going to throw them all away. However, I would like to put something on the record that Senator O'Rourke and I discussed this morning.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: It fascinates me that politicians and party leaders have not woken up to the fact that 72% of people over the age of 50 vote. This is the highest proportion of voters of any age group in society. We spoke earlier about companies selling products to younger people. If they get some common sense the Government and politicians will sell their policies to the people over 50, of whom 72% vote.

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)

Mary White: Who was talking about facials?

Seanad: Ageism Policy: Statements (Resumed). (17 May 2006)
