Joe McHugh: I thank Ms O'Connell. I call Senator Chambers first, to be followed by Deputy Ó Murchú. I have a quick question. What was the sample size for the poll? Perhaps that is more relevant to Mr. O'Shea's area.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and Other Matters: European Movement Ireland (28 Sep 2022)
Joe McHugh: I will leave the regional breakdown until the end. It is somewhat disconcerting that on some of them, especially the question on the future of Europe, 45% of the responses were from Connaught-Ulster. That area is the most peripheral within Europe, but we will come to that. Before Senator Chambers comes in, I would like to ask about the cost. How much was the work commissioned from RED C?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and Other Matters: European Movement Ireland (28 Sep 2022)
Joe McHugh: I thank members. I also thank Ms O'Connell and Mr. O'Shea. The engagement has been very helpful and informative. We will take the witnesses up on the suggestion to look at areas where we can work together. Our focus as a committee is to continue to look at the eastern front of Europe. We want to continue with our engagement with the Balkan countries. We had a representative of North...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and the General Affairs Council: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)
Joe McHugh: I will ask a question in the context of Ms Collins's former role. One of the things we picked up on when we went to Romania and Moldova was a clear message coming from politicians that because of the war they are now getting attention they were not getting previously. Is attention to eastern bloc countries something Ms Collins believes was missing prior to the war? I know that she was...

Joe McHugh: The Minister of State should not be defensive. It is not a criticism of what we are doing as a country. It was an observation made by many people about Europe, not about Ireland. That was the sense we got. I do not think I am talking out of line when I say that is what we picked up. At the end of the day, there is a massive focus on that region now. There is now a pathway for Ukraine,...
