Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I am practicing my bilocation skills today. I am also a member of the education committee, which is sitting at the same time. I apologise if this question has been asked but the Chair can redirect me if so. I wanted to ask the representatives of DCU about the practical steps. I want a better understanding of how this can be applied. Straight away, I am thinking of South East...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: It is hugely heartening that DCU has had a big increase in both students and staff who are happy to identify as being autistic. The consultation was probably a huge part of that in feeding into that inclusivity. Could Dr. Sweeney give concrete examples? If I went to DCU, what would I notice that is different from the way the university was before this process?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: There is also the brass tacks question. Was it resource intensive? It sounds as though DCU went through an extensive consultation period. It sounds excellent. Did it cost a lot of money?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Whatever it cost, it was worth every penny.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank the Minister for attending. I echo some of what he said in his opening statement. Progress is being made and steps are being taken in the correct direction, and it is worth again acknowledging the work the witnesses from DCU presented earlier in their principles for an autism-friendly university. In regard to funding, if I understand the Minister, 19 project plans have applied for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Mental Health Supports in Schools and Tertiary Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I am caught slightly on the hop by being called first but I thank our guests for their presentations. I agree it is very important work, as Dr. Muldoon set out. I want to look at that in a little more detail but will turn to Mr. Kelly first. He knows I do not need to be convinced of the benefits of in-school growing. It is something I have been doing for a number of years. I give...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Mental Health Supports in Schools and Tertiary Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I realise the clock is against me, but what Dr. Muldoon was driving at about the need for integration between the Department and the HSE if we are putting these mental health services into schools is of critical importance. I was at a meeting with Tusla representatives in the south east yesterday and was struck again by the piecemeal nature of the supports offered to children. They end up...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Mental Health Supports in Schools and Tertiary Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I did not get an opportunity in the first round because we were very time constricted. I acknowledge the work in libraries. I know Barnardos does fantastic work and I am aware of the Fighting Words series. I often read the Roddy Doyle bits in The Irish Timesand brought them into some of my senior classes. I may have kept them away from the stories by 17- and 18-year-olds with the slightly...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Mental Health Supports in Schools and Tertiary Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank Dr. Muldoon. I would like to report that there has been no reduction in the number of fights happening around the dinner table in the Ó Cathasaigh household, unfortunately.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Mental Health Supports in Schools and Tertiary Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: There is not a great record of that, I am afraid.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I raise with the Taoiseach a letter that was sent to the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, by the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights about the negotiations on the corporate sustainability due diligence, CSDD, directive. The coalition has identified that there is an opportunity for this directive to be a win-win for citizens, women's rights, companies, states and the planet. The...

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: The next grouping is a Government slot. Deputies Higgins, Alan Farrell and Devlin will share time. Deputy Higgins has four minutes.

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Next is a Government slot. Deputy Carroll MacNeill is sharing with Deputy Creed.

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank the Cathaoirleach Gníomhach for giving me the opportunity to get out of the Chair slightly early so that I could take a speaking slot. Although it might seem frivolous, when reflecting on the achievements and otherwise of COP 27, I think of the Sergio Leone film, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". We saw much of each. I will work back, beginning with the ugly. Before COP 27...

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I would still like to see members of the Opposition travel to Montreal. It is important we all pull in the same direction because too often we say we would like climate action but not this one. As a House, we all need to work together, to be honest with people and to really explain the scale of the challenge and the depth of the change needed.

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: The Deputy can be quite sure that it would not be my first time on a bog.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Meals Programme (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: 74. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if the subvention available to the school meals providers is sufficient in view of escalating costs owing to the rate of inflation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [59260/22]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Meals Programme (29 Nov 2022)

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: This question relates to a programme that I know is as close to the Minister's heart as it is to mine, namely, the school meals programme. As we all know, the cost of putting food on the table has been escalating for everybody in society. In that context, is the subvention available to school meals providers sufficient in view of the inflation in food costs across the board?
