Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Diarmuid Wilson: In spring 2009 I informed the House of the situation of a young man who had become unemployed due to the closure of a local building firm. Two years prior to 2009, he had purchased a new truck to carry out his business. The truck cost him in excess of ¤120,000 and he signed a contract with a finance agency in the car park of a public house. He made his payments and paid back every penny...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Diarmuid Wilson: - - - - -but to no avail. I am shocked and horrified to learn today that the same financial institution attempted at 5.30 a.m. to steal a farmer's tractor that he was paying for.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)

Diarmuid Wilson: He may have been paying off only ¤60 a month, but that was all he could afford to pay. It is a disgrace that this financial institution Friends First, who were sponsoring programmes on RTE up until a couple of months ago, should be allowed to engage in thuggery and theft on people who are attempting to pay their loans, which were in my opinion illegal loans in a lot of cases.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Diarmuid Wilson: At a time when vulnerable communities are worried about crime, the Minister, Deputy Shatter, used the cover of the budget to announce the closure of 100 Garda stations, including three in County Cavan, Bawnboy, Stradone and Redhills. This is a very cynical exercise by the Minister, a man who continues to treat the Garda Síochána and the people of this country with contempt. At a time when-----

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Diarmuid Wilson: -----crime is on the increase, the Minister continues to close Garda stations, take Garda cars away from gardaí and lock them up in the Phoenix Park. The gardaí are supposed to police their areas by using CCTV while sitting in Garda stations in the main towns. It is a hugely cynical exercise by the Minister which I strongly condemn. I have a question for the Leader. Will he invite the...
