- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Is it?
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I am pleased to welcome the Bill. As the Minister has said, the legislation allows for the establishment of the European Parliament constituencies. We all know that they will be changed and we will lose one of our Irish MEPs when the European Parliament elections take place. At present, there are many MEPs in the North-West constituency and it must take into account people from one end of...
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I thought it had, and had recommended no change.
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Yes, I know. The Boundary Commission illustrated the comprehensive reforms that the Minister intends to make in order to ensure the change comes into play. I have read the Bill and noticed that the constituencies are large. Some countries have single-seat constituencies or a national list system, but Ireland has never considered adopting the system and it has not been mentioned in the Bill....
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Notification should happen. It is legislatively important that death certificates be forwarded. It costs local authorities a great deal of money to maintain the electoral register. We would save money. If a person dies, he or she is dead and cannot vote, yet he or she is still on the register. How can we approach this?
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: That is why I am trying to ensure there is no duplication of votes. The Minister should consider how to approach this issue. There must be a legislative method. Every death is published online. A link between www.rip.ie and the local authorities would make the process easier, cheaper, more efficient and more straightforward. The Minister might revert to me on this suggestion. IT works...
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: On a point of order, it is especially disappointing that they are not here for a debate on a Bill that is of particular importance for the local government sector.
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Is it not? I am disappointed that they have not fulfilled the duties they were democratically elected or selected to do, as the case may be.
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: One only does so when one knew the deceased well.
- Seanad: Electoral, Local Government and Planning and Development Bill 2013: Second Stage (19 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Now.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: Ba mhaith liom fíorfháilte a chur roimh an Seanadóir Hildegarde Naughton. Bhí sé ar intinn agam na focail breátha a chuala muid ón Seanadóir Leyden a rá. Gabhaim míle buíochas leis. Tá súil agam go mbeidh focail fíordheasa le rá ag Sinn Féin, go mórmhór an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh, a thagann...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I support the issue raised by Senator Burke, which I raised yesterday. He emphasised the need for the child care debate. Again I would like to talk about children, although I do so in an indirect way. A survey was carried out in the US which showed that a healthy breakfast prevents heart disease. The survey was carried out on 27,000 men over a 20 year period, and it has shown that men who...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I am minding Senator Brennan.
- Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Tuarascáil (Atógáil) - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I was not going to speak, as I contributed on Second Stage. If only I had a button to delete repetitions from contributions in the Seanad. They should be banned. There should be a machine to survey regurgitation-----
- Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Tuarascáil (Atógáil) - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: That is why we are voting for it.
Caít Keane: I was spurred to rise. A Senator referred to the Title of the Bill and said it was an abolition of the Seanad Bill. This House is noted for putting facts on the record and for scrutinising Bills in detail and not allowing misinformation that this Bill is about abolition of the Seanad go out. The Bill's Title is the Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of the Seanad) Bill....
- Seanad: An Bille um Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Cúigiú Céim - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Fifth Stage (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I was not going to speak at all, but I could not sit here and listen to motives being attributed to me on how or why I am going to vote. I vote because I want to vote. I am voting for the Bill because ten reports have been produced on Seanad reform during the years-----
- Seanad: An Bille um Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Cúigiú Céim - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Fifth Stage (23 Jul 2013)
Caít Keane: I am proud to say I am voting for it. It has been stated the Title of the Bill is the "Abolition of the Seanad Bill". That is wrong. The Title is the Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2013. It is only the people who can change the Constitution. I am giving the vote to the people of Ireland.

Caít Keane: That is what the Taoiseach said.

Caít Keane: Sit down.
