Select Committee on Health: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: No, I am okay.

Mattie McGrath: I record my opposition to the amendment.

Select Committee on Health: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I want to protest the amendment. There are several others that follow a pattern of seeking to delete the requirement to have two doctors examine the pregnant woman before approving an abortion due to the risk to the life or health of the woman. They would also, perhaps, only have had a conversation over the telephone.

Select Committee on Health: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: Can I finish? It is my belief that it does. As I said, two doctors might have a discussion without having physically examined the pregnant woman. I oppose this amendment.

Structural Assessments of Schools: Statements (7 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I wish the Minister well in his new portfolio; I am sorry that he has been greeted with this matter. I worked with him when he was Chief Whip and he was very co-operative. I know he will be same in his new role. My questions are similar to those asked by Deputy Wallace. I want to declare an interest in this as I am a plant hire contractor. I have worked in many jobs. To lay a simple...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (7 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I will ask a question that comes under the remit of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. It relates to the over-population of deer. Farmers, householders, road-users and everyone else are threatened and intimidated by these animals. Certainly, they are nice animals but they are creatures of habit and they cross roads in west Waterford and south Tipperary to go for water....

Mattie McGrath: They are not working.

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (7 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: Who is going to do it?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: 4. To ask the Minister for Rural and Community Development if the rural regeneration and development fund could be used for transport projects as the main difficulty in towns such as Tipperary is traffic flow and transport projects are deemed to be the most urgent need for the regeneration of the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [46357/18]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I was attending a meeting of the Business Committee. I apologise for missing my slot and thank the Leas-Cheann Comhairle for his co-operation. Can the rural regeneration and development fund be used for transport projects? I am talking specifically about the N24 which runs through Tipperary town. The town is dying, but traffic is the most significant problem. The Taoiseach recently...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: That sounds great. I salute all of the applicants, community activists and groups that submitted applications, but I do not think the Minister answered my question, which was whether the money could be used to help Tipperary town, which is stagnant largely owing to traffic problems. The only project of any significance to Tipperary town is the N24, Pallasgreen to Cahir road, project....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I never asked whether the Minister supported the applications that had been made. I am talking about a shift in emphasis. We recently received a very good report on the level of deprivation in south and west Tipperary in comparison with that in the north east inner city of Dublin that had been prepared by Lisa English from JOBS FOR TIPP. While the matter does not specifically come within...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: I offer my sympathies to the family of Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. He was a proud Clonmel and Tipperary man. He achieved so much in his life, including the amount of tuition he gave to students at the University of Limerick and also on a private basis. When he met people, he inspired them with his talents. He is up there with Seán Ó Riada and many others in...

Select Committee on Health: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2018)

Mattie McGrath: Amendment No. 146 makes provision for information that should be provided to a woman seeking an abortion in all cases except for emergencies. The woman herself decides what treatments or procedures she will have. She must be enabled to choose her treatment with full knowledge of the material facts. The Irish courts, as we know, have emphasised the distinction between elective and emergency...

Mattie McGrath: Those are his words. What is the problem?
