Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Regarding the substance of what is being offered in terms of money, redress and compensation, can the Central Bank say it is either satisfied or not in disagreement with the proposals being put forward by the various institutions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: The point I am making is that, as of now, there is no reason for the schemes proposed by the banks not to be in operation or for payments not to start to be paid before the end of the year.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: I have one final question. Professor Lane spoke about 719,000 mortgages being in the original scope for tracker mortgages and said the Central Bank zeroed in on 112,000. What are those 112,000 cases?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Is it not fair to say that 13,000 is approximately 12% of that figure, which seems a very low proportion?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Does Professor Lane accept that it is very low?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: There was an explosion of trackers in the 2000s, many of which would still have been live in 2008 and 2009. Does one in eight trackers being affected not strike Professor Lane as a very low proportion? Is 13,000 not a low figure? Is it not the case that substantially more will be impacted?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: I did not say that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (19 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Professor Lane agrees it will probably be substantially more than 13,000.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: I support Senator Horkan's proposal that there be a debate in this House on tracker mortgages. We need to expand that debate.Of the 13,000 people affected, 3,300 have been repaid to date, while a further 7,000 plus need to be repaid post-haste. We need to look not only at tracker mortgages but also at the wider impacted on group. We need to look at the mortgage interest rates being charged...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Do I feel a nomination coming on?

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: We had a good news story in Limerick city yesterday. Regeneron, a world leader in the manufacture of cutting-edge life saving drugs, announced a further 300 jobs in addition to the 500 which it already has there. It has scaled up over a three-year period to have 800 jobs in place by the end of 2018. It has already invested €650 million and will invest another €100 million in...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: No, I feel strongly on this.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Someone has to put the real position on the record.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: I will finish. These 12,000 will be paid by the end of the year. Furthermore, by the end of the year we will know the full complement of people who are affected. We will then move on to ensure that whatever legislation or regulation is required, to ensure that banks can never rip off customers ever again. It is a three-pronged approach. People are entitled to get their money back. I do...

Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: I want to speak to section 10 of the Bill------

Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)

Kieran O'Donnell: Section 10, yes. I was going with protocol. Before I do so, I welcome the Minister to the House. I commend him on how he has dealt with this issue and the openness of his approach. The Bill was never going to be easy to bring in because there is a certain historic relationship with alcohol in Ireland. People are entitled to drink in a moderate fashion. If a person wants to buy a bottle...
