John Deasy: Yesterday I got a response from the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in regard to the number of legally held handguns in this country. It seems that in 2004, there were 305 legally held handguns in this country.

John Deasy: The response specifically mentioned the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill and technical amendments to it. The number of legally held handguns has risen this year to more than 1,700. Can the Tánaiste tell me the reason there has been an almost six-fold increase in legally held handguns?
