- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Medical Card Reviews (1 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. Unfortunately, he only told me that which I already know. He agreed with me that in the context of this policy development, the HSE suspended reviews - including appeals - of medical cards. Why was the review relating to the man in question not suspended? I accept the Minister of State's point to the effect that the Minister for Health has no...
- Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (2 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: It was I who raised this issue on Second Stage last week in regard to those who might have to go abroad for medical treatment for a child or to care for a sick relative or a relative who has had an accident. The Minister might indicate what is the timescale involved in the word "temporarily". In one case I know of, a family had to take their child abroad for four or five months to have...

Marie Moloney: During last week's debate, I also raised the issue of grants such as those paid to third-level students, the elderly and the disabled. While the Minister did not respond during the debate, in the interim she has given me written confirmation that these grants will be excluded from recovery of overpayment.

- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (8 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: People in receipt of the housing assistance payment, HAP, will not have to have Garda clearance whereas applicants for social housing and the rental accommodation system, RAS, do. Does the Minister of State have proposals to introduce Garda vetting to the HAP? Some of those housed by local authorities will have to have Garda vetting but others will not.
- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (8 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: I want to put on record that the Minister of State announced a second tranche of funding for housing voids today. That means 1,000 houses will be refurbished and let which is in addition to earlier funding for 900 houses. I pay tribute to her for putting the funding in place and hope that she will continue to do so.
- Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (8 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: I would be greatly concerned by the inclusion of this amendment to have local authorities sourcing the houses. I have come across a case in which a tenant in a private house was in receipt of rent supplement and the landlord agreed to enter the leasing scheme in respect of the house. However, the local authority told the tenant that even though she was living in it, she might not be the...

Marie Moloney: I welcome the Tánaiste to the House. She was here last week with the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill but it seemed to end so quickly. She disappeared and we did not have a chance to congratulate her on her new position. I am pleased the Tánaiste has chosen to stay on in the Department of Social Protection because she is a very good Minister for Social Protection. Now she has a...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Cancer Screening Programmes (15 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister and congratulate him on taking up his new portfolio. Many are inclined to forget that he is a qualified GP. However, I do not do so because he graduated on the same day as my son. I know he will have a good grasp of the health portfolio. Many years ago I was actively involved in a campaign to have the BreastCheck service rolled out to the southern region,...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Cancer Screening Programmes (15 Jul 2014)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister for his reply. Can he give an indication as to when we should expect the extension of the scheme to this particular age group? I very much welcome the advances in the cancer screening regime, which is having a significant impact in terms of earlier detections. The diabetic retinal screening programme that was launched last year is another welcome development. I...
