Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (14 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom mo ghlór féin a chur leis na glórtha eile anseo inniu ag déanamh chomhbhróin le clann na mná óige a fuair bás i nGaillimh. As a father whose children were all born in University Hospital Galway, I was taken aback by the news last night of this terrible tragedy and would like to convey my condolences to the families in question. I have been in contact with the...

Seanad: Civil Defence Bill 2012: Second Stage (14 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. Táimid breá-sásta go bhfuil Sinn Féin ábalta tacú leis an mBille seo agus go bhfeicimid go ndéanann sé ciall áirithe agus go bhfuil sé ag cur in ionad socruithe praiticiúla a rachaidh chun tairbhe na seirbhíse. Tá, áfach, cúpla ceist gur mhaith linn a ardú chomh maith céanna. I welcome the Minister of State to the House. As he stated, the...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Tá sé tábhachtach go bhfeicfeadh muid na tuairiscí maidir le cás na Gaillimhe agus go ndéanfadh muid breith orthu san i dtosach báire. Ironically, 17 November is World Prematurity Day and a conference is taking place today. In Ireland 4,500 babies are born prematurely every year. It means that one in every 16 women give birth to a premature baby and 500 babies are stillborn or suffer...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: They promised a lot of things.

Seanad: Chalara fraxinea (Ash Dieback Disease): Statements (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtí an Teach. I am glad Senator O'Neill put paid to the rumour going around Galway that Brian Cody and his team had something to do with the spread of the disease in Galway, Tipperary, Meath and Leitrim. I may suggest as a pre-budget submission that the Minister of State puts a levy on hurleys in Kilkenny to balance the competition across the country.

Seanad: Chalara fraxinea (Ash Dieback Disease): Statements (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is great to see my colleagues in the Seanad taking a united Ireland approach on this. In all seriousness, it is a case where an all-Ireland approach is essential. It is no harm to keep this in mind, and we could do so in many other areas also. This is a very serious issue. The emergence some weeks ago of Chalara fraxinea, or ash dieback disease, at a forest in County Leitrim has...

Seanad: Chalara fraxinea (Ash Dieback Disease): Statements (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I did not say we were surprised.

Seanad: Chalara fraxinea (Ash Dieback Disease): Statements (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We welcomed it.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Heritage Centres (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghlacadh leis an Aire Stáit, an Teachta McGinley. Chuaigh duine óna oifig i dteagmháil liom le rá go raibh aiféala air nach féidir leis bheith i láthair tráthnóna chun na ceiste seo a phlé. Glacaim leis go bhfuil an tAire Stáit gnóthach. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kehoe. I have just mentioned that an...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Heritage Centres (15 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I thank the Minister of State for that positive news. It is important if we are to meet the 2016 deadline that these matters be kept in train. I note that the planning and construction processes could take 18 and 15 months, respectively. We all know that even in the context of building a house these processes can get dragged out. Perhaps the Minister of State will clarify that the OPW will...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ach an oiread le mo chomhghleacaithe, ba mhaith liom cás na bPalaistíneach a tharraingt anuas anseo. The situation in Palestine is absolutely abhorrent. Some of the reports would literally frighten the life out of anyone. There is talk of Israeli soldiers doing leaflet drops telling people that if they move outside their houses they will be shot. We have heard stories of entire families...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We should have the Minister in the House to discuss what is going on in the region. I call on my colleagues who mentioned the Savita Halappanavar case in Galway and the obvious debate on the X case to talk to their colleagues in the Dáil and ask them to support the Sinn Féin motion before the Dáil this evening.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: That is extremely important. I agree with most of what Senator Bacik said about the need to introduce legislation as quickly as possible and to ensure that whatever is brought in is legally robust. Seven Governments in the past 20 years did not legislate or act on this issue and it is about time this Government acted on it. In all fairness I ask it to support the motion being put forward...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Do you have evidence Jimmy? You should bring forward the evidence if you have it.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: You should be careful what you quote from the newspapers.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Who said the Seanad has no power?

Seanad: Personal Insolvency Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Nov 2012)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Tá céad fáilte roimh an Aire, mar is Bille iontach tábhachtach é seo agus is mór agam deis a fháil labhairt air, mar go bhfuil an oiread daoine sin ins an bpobal atá faoi chruachás airgeadais de bharr an méid a tharla sa tír le roinnt blianta anuas. The publication of the Bill was much anticipated both by legislators and the public at large. I have come across quite a number of...
