Topical Issue Debate: Road Safety (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: I thank Deputy Kelly for raising this very important issue and I share his great concern for road safety. If we come to the problem with different attitudes and different solutions that is no harm. He referred to road deaths, and every one is a serious tragedy which cannot be in any way redeemed or reversed. It should be tackled from very many angles. There is absolutely no one solution...

Topical Issue Debate: Road Safety (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: To set a target that would be a hostage to fortune - as was the case with the previous one - would just be foolish. If the Deputy does not question the commitment of TII or the Government to the saving of lives, he can rest assured that the absolute maximum will be done to deal with those black spots to which he refers. TII's commitment is not in doubt-----

Topical Issue Debate: Road Safety (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: Recently, many efforts have been made to address the problem mentioned by the Deputy. In particular, TII recognises the potential benefits of changing to a new fence type on the road in question, where appropriate, and, as the Deputy knows, it is working with Tipperary County Council in this regard. TII has commenced a programme of fencing maintenance along the M7 that will involve the...

Similarly, I do not have a direct role in...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Tax (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: The Non-Use of Motor Vehicles Act 2013 came into effect on 1 July 2013.  The primary purpose of the Act is to replace the system whereby a vehicle was declared off the road retrospectively, which was unverifiable, with a system under which the vehicle must be declared off the road in advance. The Act provides that a vehicle can be declared off the road for a minimum period of three...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Public Transport Provision (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: I thank Senator Davitt for raising this very important issue. I mean that genuinely. It is quite striking that since the extension of the Luas in early December, everybody wants a bit of it. It is a big success story, and I am not claiming credit for that on behalf of the Government or anybody else. The Opposition supports the project. We would like to be able to extend the Luas much...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Public Transport Provision (24 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: Their submissions will be more than welcome and they will be certainly listened to. I do not want to hold out any short-term hope because it would be unrealistic. The development of transport is very exciting and the sky is the limit.

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: I thank the Deputy for raising this issue. I fully acknowledge the problems which Deputy Lahart has put is finger on and I am grateful to him for doing this. It is right that he should do so. In acknowledging it, the Deputy also pointed out the considerable success of the Luas cross city and the fact that it is in enormous demand. As well as that, the Deputy said something which I...

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: I will not be repetitive but I will tell the Deputy that we acknowledge the problems he pointed out. What we dispute is the way he lays out the facts. He talks with great alacrity about predictions of chaos. "Chaos" is the word he used. That is great drama.

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: The Deputy's definition of chaos and mine may differ. He then throws in the kitchen sink. We get from the subject of this Topical Issue matter-----

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: -----which is to discuss College Green, to his own constituency, which he cannot leave out, and which is quite a long way from College Green-----

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: -----and then to the M50 and everywhere else. I do not blame him for doing this. It is his job.

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: His job is to bring services into his constituency. However, we are talking about the congestion at College Green. Then he says there is no vision. I do not know what he means by that. Part of the vision is the Luas cross city. It is not a bad vision and it is also a reality. I do not know whether the Deputy has heard of BusConnects. Perhaps he has not.

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)

Shane Ross: Some €790 million is promised for BusConnects-----

Topical Issue Debate: Traffic Management (25 Jan 2018)
