Select Committee on the Future of Healthcare: Health Service Reform: Representatives of Health Sector Workforce (26 Oct 2016)

Róisín Shortall: If we had a big bang in terms of a move to a totally public system, that would be a different matter, but in terms of a transition to a new type of system, there are GPs who want to continue in private practice, single-handed or group practice, and employ practice nurses. Would Mr. Mathews envisage their being able to continue to do so in a transitionary phase?

Róisín Shortall: The Medical Council surveyed doctors on the reasons and Deputy Harty referred to that earlier. It was very interesting for us to hear the results of that survey. I do not know if the INMO has surveyed its members in that regard, but we would be very interested to see any information it has on the underlying causes.

Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (2 Nov 2016)

Róisín Shortall: I am glad to have an opportunity to speak on this Bill. In the main, I would say that the Social Democrats broadly welcome this Bill which updates the law in respect of sexual offences. It has been quite a long time in gestation. It is hard to know why it has taken so long but now that it is here, many aspects of the legislation are to be welcomed. I would also have some reservations...

Public Sector Pay: Motion [Private Members] (8 Nov 2016)

Róisín Shortall: The Social Democrats support the motion because we believe in the principle behind it. Much has been made by speakers tonight about the independence of the process to determine Members' pay. I support that process fully and we should stick with it. There were many years when that was not the case and the change is an important and welcome development. That does not mean Members cannot...
