- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Third Level Costs (30 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: 247. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if he will review decisions on SUSI grants that were turned down for the 2021-22 academic year due the inability of students to prove their place of independent living from October 2020 given that the housing and rental situation was abnormal due to Covid-19, as in the case of a mature student (details supplied) who would otherwise have had...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: As a rough figure, how many hotels in and around Dublin are members of the Irish Hotels Federation?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: There have been references to prices of €400, €500 and €600. Senator Cassells referred to €700 per night. I think every member of the committee compared prices online before the meeting. Would it be fair to say those prices are being charged by hotels that are members of the Irish Hotel Federation?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: In that case, can the federation not try to rein in those excessive prices? Can it put out a request to members, for the sake of the reputation of the hospitality sector, to rein in those extortionate prices?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: Mr. Fenn has repeatedly stated he cannot communicate with federation members regarding these extortionate prices. Can Ms Campbell do so as president?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I do not quite buy the supply issue and I will come to that in a moment. Our guests will understand why the members of this committee are so frustrated. We welcomed discussions with the IHF and its members earlier during the pandemic when we were calling for an extension of the employment wage subsidy scheme, EWSS, restart grants, Covid restrictions support scheme, CRSS, supports and a...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: It is fine to talk about the average, but the headline room costs are what will grab people's attention and they are doing the reputational damage. As Mr. Kelly mentioned earlier in response to questions following his opening statement, there is going to be a deterioration in how people view Ireland in regard to its value for money. Mr. O'Mara Walsh referred to increasing costs for hotels...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: Does Mr. Fenn accept that these extortionate prices in the Dublin area are doing reputational damage, and unequal reputational damage to the regions and places like west Cork?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Rising Cost of Tourist Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: That is vital.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank Mr. Callanan and the other speakers for the opening statements. Through Ag Climatise and the marginal abatement cost curve, MACC , agriculture is one of the only sectors with a credible roadmap on paper. There is a roadmap to follow. There will be challenges in ensuring that what is in that roadmap achieves the reductions we need but at least it is there and that has to be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: What has been done to increase the rate of approval of licences for plantation and forestry? That seems to be a huge issue. The felling seems to be smoothing itself out a small bit. There is an increased rate of applications or approvals but that is not happening with plantations. It completely flies in the face of everything we are trying to do through agriculture and climate action.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: Just one more question on transport and then I am-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I want to again stress the importance of the afforestation targets and how important this is for sequestration into the future. There is that old saying that the best time to plant a tree is 100 years ago and the next best time to plant a tree is today. We do not seem to be any closer to planting in the near future and we really need to get on top of that. I want to stress that point. I...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: It is good news that the Department is looking at a differential and, potentially, a taxation strategy to make it more affordable. As I said, it is just out of that affordability range at present but efficiency and reduction emissions could be key. It will bring a whole sector on board as well.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: We will stay with agriculture while we are on that topic. Having researched the technologies a bit, I firmly believe that anaerobic digestion will be a key technology and key tool in decarbonising agriculture, as was just discussed. Mr. Callanan mentioned acclimatising the mean annual temperature curve, and there were references to anaerobic digestion. It seems that we do not really have a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: On using gas generated from anaerobic digestion as renewable energy to create electricity, I recently visited an anaerobic digestion plant in Timoleague where it has been estimated that over the ten years it has been there, it has saved about 1 million tonnes of carbon. It also generates enough power for about 1,000 homes. Surely there are emission reduction benefits there.
- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Jul 2022)
Christopher O'Sullivan: The shortage of home care workers is causing considerable undue hardship for older people and their families. It especially affects older people who may have had major procedures in hospital and cannot be discharged because they may require two home care workers. Because they cannot be discharged, they have to spend longer than they should in hospital. There is a solution to this. The...
