Adjournment Debate Matters. (23 Feb 2006)

Jim Glennon: I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Neville — Adare sewerage scheme; (2) Deputy Durkan — to discuss the deportation of a person (details supplies) in County Dublin; (3) Deputy Costello — the need for the Minister to establish an inquiry into the death of...

Lourdes Hospital Inquiry: Statements. (8 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: I join my colleagues in complimenting Judge Harding Clark on her excellent report and the manner in which she conducted her inquiry. I also compliment the brave midwife who stood up and shouted "stop". I welcome members of Patient Focus to the House and particularly compliment and congratulate them on their resilience, persistence and, above all, dignity in the face of significant personal...

Order of Business. (9 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: You will fix it all next week.

National Sports Campus Development Authority Bill 2006: Second Stage. (9 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: It is nothing new.

National Sports Campus Development Authority Bill 2006: Second Stage. (9 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: For a minute I thought I was listening to Deputy O'Connor reading out a litany of the clubs in his constituency. Perhaps Deputy McGrath is spending too much time listening to the Deputy. He will be pleased to realise that his influence has gone across the city.

National Sports Campus Development Authority Bill 2006: Second Stage. (9 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: It is a pleasure to speak on the Bill and to congratulate the Minister, Deputy O'Donoghue, and his officials, especially Mr. Con Haugh, on all the achievements that have been made over recent years in sport in Ireland, particularly the very positive and benign influence of the Government in the major developments that are taking place. Listening to some of my colleagues on the opposite side,...

National Sports Campus Development Authority Bill 2006: Second Stage. (9 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: It is a pleasure to speak on the Bill, even though my time will be divided between this afternoon and the next day. I reiterate my compliments to the Minister and his staff. Sport in Ireland has come on in leaps and bounds over recent years. The number of women participating in sport, which I will deal with in the other part of my contribution, is growing at a phenomenal rate. One only has to...

National Sports Campus Development Authority Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (21 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: As I indicated during my last contribution to this debate, it is a pleasure to speak in support of this proposal. I dealt with the generalities of the legislation during my previous contribution, but given the week we have just had in terms of Irish sport, it is worthwhile to reflect on the relevance of sport to the Irish nation. It is often said we are a nation of sports fans, and last week...

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak in support of the Government's amendment to this motion, having listened to the debate last night. My colleague, Deputy O'Flynn, commented that in his maiden speech, he made a reference to Ray Burke which he subsequently came to regret. In my maiden speech, some five years later, I also had reason to speak regarding former Deputy Burke. I did so...

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: Last night, the contributions of Opposition Members and of the Green Party in particular appeared to be intent on maligning those of us elected to public office who are, as I have just stated, making strenuous efforts at present to rid ourselves of the legacy of a particular era. However, I felt that the comments were particularly directed towards the Fianna Fáil Party, of which I am proud...

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: I wonder whether this has anything to do with a certain cosying up, for its own purposes, on the part of the Green Party with Fine Gael. Does it seek to become the third party around the coffee table in Mullingar? As for the Labour Party, I have often reflected on the source of its income. I wonder whether it will reconsider the huge revenues it receives every year from the trade union movement.

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: Much of it is deducted at source from trade union members who do not know where their money goes. It is taken from members and activists of all political parties and none. I wonder whether this has been a topic of discussion in Mullingar, where Deputy Kenny was quick to repeal his predecessor's ban on corporate donations. It did not last long and was only in place for approximately 16 months....

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: I wonder did the Sinn Féin Members, who castigated Fianna Fáil last night, raise the same level of concern within their own party with regard to the criminal activities that took place. Everyone knows that activities such as money laundering, protection rackets, smuggling and bank robberies took place. Bank robberies for political fundraising is not a recent phenomenon. I had the misfortune...

Political Donations and Planning: Motion (Resumed). (22 Mar 2006)

Jim Glennon: The acknowledgement by the World Economic Forum at Davos of Ireland's environmental achievement should be considered. A report prepared for that forum by Yale and Colombia Universities ranked Ireland tenth of 133 countries globally and seventh in the European Union for environmental achievement. We are making rapid progress and have come a long way. However, it ill behoves us as politicians,...
