Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Decarbonisation Strategy for Aviation and Shipping Sectors: Minister of State at the Department of Transport (12 Jul 2023)

Regina Doherty: I have not read the ReFuelEU policy, so I ask the Minister of State to excuse my ignorance. Within that policy, are there sticks if countries or the industry do not reach the targets by the years outlined? I understand why we cannot provide incentives but are there penalties if countries do not meet the targets?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Decarbonisation Strategy for Aviation and Shipping Sectors: Minister of State at the Department of Transport (12 Jul 2023)

Regina Doherty: I thank the Minister of State.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: Welcome back, everybody. I apologise for being late. I had another meeting that ran over. I thank the delegates for the information I have just learned. I encounter the same issues, obviously. It is quite hard for people to understand delays until April, May and June next year, but I appreciate that everything is being done to fix this. On a separate note, my question today is about a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: Ms Coleman might have answered the next question. I was going to ask what the proper body is to which the complaints are referred.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: Ms Coleman said the RSA manages. The individuals do not work for the RSA – I get that – but it is the authority that regulates this particular industry-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: -----and the register is under its control. Where there is a complaint such as that against the who's-your-daddy gentleman, does he have his registration removed or is he is he allowed to carry on? After the complaint, is he still on the register? I do not even know his name, or want to.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: According to the story in the paper, it did. Obviously, I can rely only on that. I am not trying to be smart here – I honestly mean that – and I get that a case must be reported to the Garda, which is fine, but the RSA is the authority that allows the person to have another lady in his car the next week or month. There should be repercussions. Behavioural standards have to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: That is really good but what is lacking in what I am being told is that the RSA still does not know whether people who have had complaints made about them are on or off the register. I appreciate that the delegates do not have the information now, but-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: I get that but the complaints I am speaking about have both been made to the RSA, according to the article. I might come back to the delegates on this and send an email or something regarding the specific points.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: What is worrying is that the RSA cannot say whether people who have had serious complaints made against them are still on the register. That is a little concerning. It is mostly kids and young people who feel they are in a vulnerable position. Many kids, because they go through insurance companies to get their 12 lessons as part of being put on their mother's or father's insurance, do not...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: -----is vulnerable. I appreciate that Mr. Walsh is new and there are new processes and so on, which are all very welcome. Does he think it would be appropriate that, for argument sake, if I made a complaint to my car driver instruction company, it would be incumbent upon them, as part of the regulation of the industry, that they would report something like that to the RSA, whose job it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: Does that mean that the authority does not have that power right now?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Car Testing: Discussion (20 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: Is this the road safety-----

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by An Taoiseach (28 Sep 2023)

Regina Doherty: On behalf of our Fine Gael group, which I am incredibly proud to lead in this House, I welcome the Taoiseach. There are 16 of us in total and a great mix of youth, experience and expertise unique to most of us on individual matters, and I rely on that expertise of our colleagues today. I thank the Taoiseach for that honour. I have been in these Houses, both Dáil and Seanad...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Oct 2023)

Regina Doherty: I thank the Cathaoirleach, and I might try my skills at doing the same. I want to raise with the Leader today the plight of our section 39 workers. We have, not just in my own area of north County Dublin and Fingal but probably in every county, organisations that are filled with nurses, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, support people and healthcare workers. All of...

Seanad: Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Motion (4 Oct 2023)

Regina Doherty: If the Chair does not mind, I would be grateful. I thank the Minister for coming here today. I do not doubt for a second that he will get to the bottom of this issue. I have been around here since 2011. We have had incredible medical scandals including one in which a procedure called a symphysiotomy was conducted on female patients, which is the most horrendous thing anybody can even...

Seanad: Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Motion (4 Oct 2023)

Regina Doherty: Otherwise, we would still be getting replies to parliamentary questions that say X, Y and Z and we would be none the wiser. Hats off to Deputy Paul Murphy. I do not agree with probably most of the things he advocates but we certainly owe him an absolute debt of gratitude for his tenacity. Otherwise, these kids would still be suffering and maybe these operations would still be going on. I...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2023)

Regina Doherty: The Order of Business is No. 1, motion re the arrangements for the sitting of the House on Tuesday, 10 October 2023, which is budget day; and No. 2, the Animal Health and Welfare (Dogs) Bill 2022 – Committee Stage, to be taken at 11.45 a.m. and to adjourn on the conclusion of the proceedings in respect of section 1 of the Bill or 45 minutes thereafter, whichever is the earlier.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2023)

Regina Doherty: We all join with the Cathaoirleach in passing condolences to both families and friends of the people who passed away yesterday. Our colleague, Senator Ruane, has again highlighted the concerns she raised last week with regard to the report on the body cameras. I will make two suggestions to the Senator. One suggestion is that she might send the link to the BBC report to all Members by email...
