Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implementation of Junior Cycle Student Award: Minister for Education and Skills (13 May 2014)

Marie Moloney: I would say people would trust anyone rather than trust a politician. I asked at the previous meeting if I could raise an issue today. The Minister does not have to give me an answer today, but perhaps he will give a commitment to come back and discuss it. It came as a great shock to all members of the committee when the Minister announced at the INTO conference that it would be a...

Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for taking over while the Minister for Social Protection takes a break. For the past two hours the social protection committee has discussed the Youth Guarantee. We have asked many questions and received many answers so I do not intend to thrash out the issue again. In Killarney town, which is where I live, it is next to impossible to find accommodation for a family with three children for less than €540 a month. Marie Moloney: I thank the officials for attending and their presentation. The committee has discussed the reduction in the level of youth unemployment which could be due to emigration and young people remaining in education, as well as some going back to work. How many have returned to work? We know the percentage reduction, but we would like to know how many are going back to work as opposed to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Youth Guarantee: Department of Social Protection (28 May 2014)

Marie Moloney: The problem is that the youth guarantee has not been rolled out. We need this to happen. Mr. McKeon has outlined dates for the passage of the legislation. Let us get it through. What is holding it up? What is holding the legislation up? Let us get it through. Why is it being held up so long? I contacted the Intreo office and in fairness to the person I dealt with, and I must put on record the Intreo office in Killarney is second to none and the staff are outstanding and a great help to people, the only solution we could come up with was that the person would work three days and keep his entitlement to jobseeker's allowance.
