Consumer Credit (Amendment) Bill 2012: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (18 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: In the last 17 months I have heard many speeches delivered with a brass neck by Ministers. Last night, however, I heard one of the most delusional speeches I have heard in all that time. The Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Brian Hayes, argued that a consequence of capping the APR rate at 40% would be that "moneylending would no longer be viable, licence renewals would...

Jonathan O'Brien: Question 14: To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if his attention has been drawn to the Australian Government's initiative regarding Arts and Culture, which had been designed to radically change the country's creative landscape over a ten year period with the specific aim of creating a more enlightened, cohesive and creative citizenry; his plans to introduce a similar...

Jonathan O'Brien: Question 48: To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht his plans to introduce a cultural rights framework that would have the capacity to foster self expression, self esteem, creativity and civic participation, a rights system that would have the capacity to take account of the human person, especially of those voices unheard or marginalised in our society; and if he will make...

Jonathan O'Brien: I move amendment No. 17: In page 13, lines 23 to 31, to delete all words from and including "knowingly" in line 23 down to and including "respect."," in line 31 and substitute the following: "knowingly accepts payments of the kind outlined in section 23AA(1)(ii) (inserted by section 7 of the Electoral (Amendment) (Political Funding Act) 2012).",".

Government Response to Mahon Tribunal Recommendations: Statements (19 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: There is a certain irony in watching Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael fighting it out to see which can stand tallest on the mountain of morality and claim to be the least corrupt in Irish politics. It is amusing.

Government Response to Mahon Tribunal Recommendations: Statements (19 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I would put the history of my party against that of the Minister's party any day of the week.

Government Response to Mahon Tribunal Recommendations: Statements (19 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I agree with Deputy Niall Collins that dealing with the recommendations in the Mahon tribunal report does not absolve anybody of everything that happened up to that point. We certainly must, in the public interest, investigate all of the issues the Deputy has raised. My party will support any such investigation. However, we are here today to discuss the recommendations set out in the report...

Government Response to Mahon Tribunal Recommendations: Statements (19 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: He seems to be multitasking.

Government Response to Mahon Tribunal Recommendations: Statements (19 Jul 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: What my colleagues and I have to say makes a great deal more sense than much of what we hear from the Minister. We have had statements from three Ministers today outlining the Government's response to the recommendations in the Mahon tribunal report. We certainly welcome some of the initiatives which have been undertaken. The Minister, Deputy Howlin, spoke about the register of lobbyists...

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: The council is refusing to process applications.

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: I do not know whether the Taoiseach has seen the letter from Clare County Council but it states clearly that to process the application, it is seeking proof of payment of the household charge. That is unacceptable and it is not good enough for him to come into the House and wash his hands of it.

Order of Business (18 Sep 2012)

Jonathan O'Brien: It was also not good enough for the Minister for Education and Skills to support the move by Clare County Council this morning. The Taoiseach and the Minister have a responsibility to ensure that people have access to education and they should not support moves by any county council that prevent access to education. The Taoiseach's comments are not good enough.
