Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Preparations (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Does the Minister believe that the transport system notably at our major entry and exist points are adequately prepared for the ramifications of a no-deal Brexit? As he is aware we face the distinct possibility, particularly in light of the proposals coming from the United Kingdom in the past 24 hours, of a no-deal Brexit. It is an outcome that would have disastrous implications for the...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Preparations (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I thank the Minister. Only 200,000 of the 1.3 million containers arriving in Dublin Port originate from outside the EU. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, that figure would rise to 1 million, which would be an astronomical increase in customer requirements. Dublin Port is our largest port, handling 38 million tonnes of cargo per annum. The equivalent of 13 km, or approximately 8 miles, of...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Brexit Preparations (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I feel sorry for the hauliers who are going to get the text message. God knows where they will be when they get it. Some 40% of our unitised exports will go via the landbridge, as the Minister well knows. We have a great deal of time-sensitive agricultural and pharmaceutical produce. Has the Minister met Dublin Port and the major ferry companies to establish alternative routes to the...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Public Transport (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: 84. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he has considered establishing a transport security unit to tackle widespread and dangerous antisocial behaviour on public transport and at public transport hubs. [39771/19]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Licences (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: 87. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he has engaged with his Cabinet colleagues and UK counterparts to ensure that returning emigrants who hold UK licences will continue to be able to swap their licences for an Irish driver licence even in the event of a no-deal Brexit. [39770/19]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I am new to this committee. Are we just here to re-affirm the witness’s appointments?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Not that I want to, but can we block them?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I just wanted to see if there was a formal function of the committee in this regard. Is this confirmation that is required or is it an opportunity to comment on their appointments?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Is there a time limit?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I am confused that Kilkenny County Council has a role in Waterford Port?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Kilkenny does not have a coastline. It is the river. How does it work in practical terms to be dealing with two local authorities?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: There is a unique situation there because the port is load on-load off, lo-lo, rather than roll on-roll off, ro-ro.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I was a beef exporter in the past and we loaded boats there for Egypt in the day. A no-deal Brexit would be good for the port in the sense that it is looking at direct exports to mainland Europe and further afield rather than the landbridge route.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I do not doubt Mr. Whelan's vision in this regard but I am not sure the Minister shares it, in that the reason I am late for the meeting is a priority question was asked in the Dáil on this very issue and the Minister did not mention Waterford as a potential pressure valve or with regard to the future. It was all about, sadly, that when we get congestion we will text drivers and get...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: The port's master plan is to the year 2044.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: It sounds like an incredibly long period of time to have a master plan in place. I presume it is a fluid master plan.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: The business plan is different. Is it planned to adjust the master plan on a five yearly basis?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Group and Port of Waterford Company: Chairpersons Designate (2 Oct 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I did not get into the type of detail in the master plan that I would have liked. With regard to the capital expenditure required to grow the facility and build towards its potential, is this planned to be self-sourcing in terms of revenue building and leveraging against borrowings or is the port dependent on the Department, Transport Infrastructure Ireland or others to divvy up the investment?
