- Seanad: Home Help Services. (20 May 2009)
John Moloney: I reiterate my response that the aim of the HSE is to deliver the same level of service as it delivered last year. However, I must add the caveat that it is reviewing the premium rates paid at weekends. That is possibly what the Senator has been hearing on the ground. The HSE intends to deliver the same level of service in terms of home support hours.
- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities. (20 May 2009)
John Moloney: I thank Senator McFadden for raising the issue, and Senator Cassidy. I thank Senator McFadden for the invitation to come into the House, and I will do so. I do not mean to long-finger this. I do not blame any Senator for expressing concern about the recommendations in the Government's reform programme, A Vision for Change. It is fair and proper for me to say that not alone is Senator...
- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities. (20 May 2009)
John Moloney: I understand Senator McFadden is seriously concerned. I have met Ms Maura Morgan, Mr. Joe Moran and Mr. Donal Fitzsimons. I do not want to give the Senator an answer for the sake of it. I accept fully this issue must be dealt with. The Department and the HSE must work out how we can increase staffing levels. This morning I gave the Department certain figures and have asked whether we...
- Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Motion (21 May 2009)
John Moloney: I move: That Dáil Ãireann: â recognises the funding provided to Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) each year by the Health Service Executive to provide services to its members (â¬1.2 million in 2008); â recognises that the Health Research Board (HRB) is the statutory agency with responsibility for funding health research in Ireland with a view to improving health and health outcomes; â...
- Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Motion (21 May 2009)
John Moloney: I thank the Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I do not want to just go through the motion of thanking Deputies because I recognise the concerns of Deputies on both sides of the House. I thank those who tabled the motion. To pick up on Deputy Jan O'Sullivan's point, I recognise the involvement of the Joint Committee on Health and Children in this area. Seldom have I seen motions come before the...
- Written Answers — Services for People with Disabilities: Services for People with Disabilities (21 May 2009)
John Moloney: I assume the Deputy is referring to the provision of personal social support services, rather than mainstream health services, to persons with a disability. These are designed to allow people with a disability to live a life of their choice to the greatest extent possible. As such, the nature, content and extent of such supports should depend upon the degree to which the individual needs...
- Written Answers — Medical Aids and Appliances: Medical Aids and Appliances (21 May 2009)
John Moloney: I understand from the Health Service Executive that the practice is to recycle aids and appliances to the greatest extent possible. On return, used aids and appliances are examined for damage, sent for decontamination, repaired if required and returned to stores for issue to another client. However, some items, such as crutches and Zimmer frames, are considered single use items and the...

An additional 18 beds will be provided for the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service in 2009, bringing the total capacity to 30 beds. Ten of...

- Early Childhood Care and Education. (26 May 2009)
John Moloney: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "Dáil Ãireann" and substitute the following: commends the Government on its decision to introduce a free preschool year in early childhood care and education, ECCE, scheme with effect from January 2010 and supports: â the fact that the Government will re-direct over â¬170 million in savings from the removal of the early child care...
- Early Childhood Care and Education. (26 May 2009)
John Moloney: I am not too sure. The introduction of this scheme, at a cost of â¬170 million in a full year, has been made possible at this time of extreme economic pressure because the decision has been taken to redirect the savings which will arise from the abolition of the early child care supplement to a targeted and child-centred measure, as has been called for by the sector for many years. With the...
- Early Childhood Care and Education. (26 May 2009)
John Moloney: I am just making a point about major misgivings and not about the principle. Many of us will remember the vehemence with which Fine Gael denounced the introduction of the ECS in 2006. It should be careful it does not follow the populist approach it took to the supplement - it objected to workers from other EU states, who were paying tax and PRSI in this State, being entitled to receive that...
- Early Childhood Care and Education. (26 May 2009)
John Moloney: I am just responding to criticism and no more than that. Must I seek the authority of Deputy McCormack to continue? I believed I had possession.
