- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I am very concerned about this proposal because my experience with European Union regulations and directives is they all pertain to worthy causes and principles with which no one can argue but when they get their teeth in it, it becomes a total bureaucratic nightmare. The reality is that facing eastward, we face Britain and facing to the west, we face the United States of America and Canada....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes, a negative reasoned opinion.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I propose the joint committee should submit a negative reasoned opinion in respect of Europe taking control of this issue. I believe Ireland should have a spatial plan and have no problem with what the Departments are doing. I am absolutely 100% in favour of it but my point is that if members are considering this issue in Ireland's national context, America and Britain are important....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Exactly, that is the issue.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I welcome the delegation which has made a powerful presentation. The unusual feature of the proposal to sell Coillte's harvesting rights is that I have not heard anyone, other than members of the Government, speak in favour of it. I hope the indications given this week that the Government is rethinking its proposal are correct. The Irish Timber Council has outlined succinctly, from the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Another issue is that much of the land suitable for planting is now ruled out for ecological reasons. It is nearly impossible to get planning permission on new land. May I make a further comment?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: On rural recreation and the financial performance of Coillte, as a citizen of this nation, taking the wider interest into account, where a State body invests in public good as an alternative to giving money directly to the Exchequer and then asks that the Exchequer return the money back to it in order for it to do the public good job, that is a dividend. It is fair to say that Coillte has...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Give or take, that is what I thought. They predominately go to the private sector.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Then one must acknowledge that there were 22 years in which we did not have to give Coillte €100 million because it has been self-sustaining. I am concerned about Coillte's sale of land. It is a matter to which the committee should address itself. I was fascinated by what Mr. Fahy had to say. It is fair to say that he, his father, Mr. P. J. Fahy, and Connacht Gold have done a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It would be useful for us to get clarification from Coillte on its selling policy. A further issue is that some of the land sold was low-productivity land in terms of forest. It owned all sorts of bits of land.
