Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (10 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: I welcome the opportunity to speak on the Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill. I welcome the debate as it provides all of us with an opportunity to constantly examine and reform our electoral system, both nationally and at local government level. I welcome the Bill as a disqualification should not apply for election to the National Parliament or European Parliament, as in the case of 18...

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (10 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: I was referring to the Minister of State's colleagues in government. Let us move away from the monarchists for a while and get back to building a democratic, inclusive republic which respects all our citizens, including Independent candidates. That is a very important reform that should be put down. Some of us have checked up on this issue on the legal side. The Electoral (Amendment) Act...

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (10 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: I am an independent candidate, as the Minister knows very well. The expression will also be specified with regard to the candidate on all ballot papers and notices. This regulation is based on the premise that "non-party" on the ballot paper indicates adequately that a person does not belong to a political party. There are no proposals for legislative change in this regard. This is what...

Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2014)

I commend Deputy Stephen Donnelly on his introduction of this legislation and I thank him for raising this important issue. I note that the Minister is here this morning to contribute to the debate, even though from his introductory remarks it seems he is having a bad hair day. I do not...

Finian McGrath: 100. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation if he will implement Social Justice Ireland’s part-time job opportunities programme that could create 100,000 part-time jobs. [17469/14]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Job Creation (15 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: With regard to the issue of job creation, will the Minister implement Social Justice Ireland’s part-time job opportunities programme, which could create in the region of 100,000 jobs? Is the Minister open to new ideas in regard to job creation? This is very important because there seems to be a mindset in this country at present that focuses on high quality, high education jobs while...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Job Creation (15 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: I am glad to hear the Minister say he is open to it because we all agree that job creation is a key priority. My question concerns the long-term unemployed. We must accept the reality that these 100,000 people have been forgotten. Market-based initiatives will not deal with many of the long-term unemployed. It is great to see jobs coming in, particularly for highly educated people, but we...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Job Creation (15 Apr 2014)

Finian McGrath: My focus is on the other measures. I accept the Minister's point. This experiment was tried in 1994 in areas like Finglas, Blanchardstown and Clonmel. It ended up creating in the region of 1,000 jobs in the community and voluntary sector. At the end of it, more than 500 people got real jobs and exited long-term unemployment. These are the other measures and we must focus on these issues....
