Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: There is something very sad about having to have young students tell us where we are going wrong in our teaching. We should have a proper strategy and know what we mean by qualitative teaching across all disciplines. We take that very much for granted at third level. We do not take it so much for granted at first level and second level. That is what I meant by my remark earlier. One of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I will look at this document.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I asked Mr. Boland what university was doing it and leading the way in this regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I beg the Chairman's pardon and I thank her.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: If Mr. Boland was to give urgent advice to the Government, what would it be? Across the whole area of higher education, is there something urgent coming down the track in the next two or three years that we are not giving sufficient attention to or is there anything that comes to mind that he would like to give advice on?

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I stand to relay a bit of very good news. We have a lottery regulator, Mr. Liam Sloyan. Although he exists, I cannot find him because he has not yet taken up his position. He exists in the ether. I am delighted he exists because he has much to answer for and to look after with the lottery, which was taken out of Irish hands and sold in order to build the children's hospital.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: We have not seen one brick of that. Mr. Sloyan comes from an actuarial background. I am delighted at his appointment, which came on 17 November.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Yes. He was very kindly going to answer the question yesterday and I now have the answer. The Irish lottery has seen much debacle and I just wanted to let Senators know that although the regulator exists, he has not yet taken office. It is being dealt with by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. There is a second issue which is not such good news. Will the Leader invite the...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It must have been a huge bustle he was walking past. On a serious note, I would like the Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, to come to the House and explain to me how Bank of Ireland is continuing to do to the people what it did during the banking crisis. Edgar Allen Poe wrote a short story entitled The Fall of the House of Usher, and one could align it to the fall of the house of banking...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It was not.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator cannot say that.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator cannot speak like that. He cannot claim that it was a direct assault-----

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Does he have his definitions of "dignity" with him this morning?

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator should sit down. He is now coming here to give us definitions of "dignity"-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I welcome the delegates and thank them for their presentations. They have given us an extraordinary amount of information. I am sure I have seen Dr. Larkin wandering about Leinster House. Does he work here in some capacity?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Senator Barrett is very fortunate to have Dr. Larkin. My first question is for Mr. Costello. Much of what he had to say seemed rather depressing, whereas the contribution from Mr. Purser made me feel elated. That was somewhat confusing in terms of what we should be taking away from this meeting. Mr. Costello referred to the deterioration in the student-staff ratio. Mr. Tom Boland of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I was thinking of it at undergraduate level and in the context of the deterioration in the ratios that Mr. Costello mentioned. I was not thinking of it in terms of entrepreneurial skills, learning from it, innovation and having to research matters to move them on. I was thinking of it at a completely different level but I take Mr. Costello's point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: What is our guests' view on the awful debacle which took place recently in the context of students from Brazil, India and elsewhere who came here to pursue English language courses? I accept that this has nothing to do with the universities and relates to private institutions. The Department of Education and Skills took its eye off the ball on this matter and the Department of Justice and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: They were also badly affected because we expect the Department of Justice and Equality, when it stamps something, to engage in proper scrutiny.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I take on board what the Deputy is saying and I am aware that the level of collaboration that exists with some of these countries in the areas of medical science and biotechnology are phenomenal. Those young people who came here to study had an expectation that they were doing so at a level that had been approved by someone.
