Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary) (30 Nov 2021) David Stanton: The other question I had was about the humanitarian flood relief scheme.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: Good. I thank our guests for being here and for their presentation. They have covered so much. I noticed that recently they had a paper on climate change, much of which had to do with technology, electric cars and so on. Have they looked at all at the challenges posed by rising sea levels and the kinds of skills we might need in the future to deal with that? I have here a book by John...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I will be brief. I am intrigued by what Dr. Power might say regarding rising sea levels. He did not get time earlier. I will go through my other questions before he answers but I will put it to him we need architects and engineers to start designing stuff. We either put up barriers, move to higher ground or put our houses up on stilts. There are many factors involved. What is happening...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: There is one such course in my town where young people learn through music, which is quite interesting. I mentioned the PolyUp maths challenge earlier. There is a pilot project in Cork at the moment, which is very exciting. I would be interested to hear Mr. Donohoe's reaction to that when he has a moment.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Engagement with the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights (7 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I welcome our witnesses and thank them for both their statements and their work in this area. I notice from the report presented to us that France and Germany have introduced laws on mandatory human rights due diligence. I am interested to know what the witnesses think of these laws. How do they impact, if at all? I notice some improvements could be made. Has any other country introduced...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Engagement with the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights (7 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: It is more a statement than a question. I am very pleased to hear that 105 investors have called for due diligence, as Ms Tunney said. I have come across that previously in the areas of diversity and climate change where investors and large corporations have learned that the bottom line can be impacted in a positive way by them doing the right thing. Diversity, for instance, can often lead...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: Chairman, how much time have I left in this slot?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: EU Special Representative: Mr. Eamon Gilmore (14 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I welcome Mr. Gilmore to the meeting. It is nice to see him again. I congratulate him on the work he is doing across the world and in Europe, for Europe and for us. Deputy Clarke has stolen some of my thunder. I was going to ask about democracy on retreat across the world as well. I was taken by the line in Mr. Gilmore's speech that 68% of the world's population now live in autocracies....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I thank Deputy Bruton. I will not take too long. I welcome our guests and thank them for the presentation. This time two years ago we were getting emails from people who were concerned about the upgrade of the Department's new software. It had caused a certain number of glitches at the time. I wanted to give the witnesses some positive feedback. As they were coming before the committee...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: Yes, and I thank Dr. McFadden. It shone a light on what is happening in the corporate world when he said there were vast numbers of searches happening. Dr. McFadden can correct me if I am wrong, but I understand that there are fees for searches and I am just curious about the income that is generated. He said there is no profit and they just cover the cost, which is fair enough. However,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I thank the witnesses.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I probably will not need seven minutes. I have just done some quick searches on websites and it seems that Ireland is doing well in respect of being a place to do, and start, business and so on. We are in the top ten or 12 and, in some cases, the top three so well done on that. We probably need to maintain that and improve on it where we can. I will ask a question in respect of small...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I am not sure whether an amnesty, as such, is possible under the legislation as it stands for companies like that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I thank our guests for being present and I thank Deputy Colm Burke for allowing me to substitute for him. As the Chairman is aware, this centre is in my town. I have been familiar with it for a very long time. I personally knew many residents who lived there, some of whom are no longer with us. I have been to the centre on many occasions, so I know it quite well. I am on record as...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I thank Dr. O'Brien. I ask her to elaborate on the difference between the high-support hostels and what is being provided at the moment in Owenacurra.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: I thank Dr. O'Brien. All present would agree with her that the best practice is for people to be looked after in their communities and homes for as long as possible. These are settings with which they are familiar. What is the level of need for a centre such as that in Owenacurra in a large area such as east Cork which covers, as she knows as well as I do, the towns of Youghal, Midleton...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
David Stanton: May I interrupt briefly? I wish to focus on east Cork. Am I right in saying that if the centre at Owenacurra closes, the nearest facility will be St. Stephen's Hospital? As Dr. O'Brien is aware, St. Stephen's is in a rural area far from any town centre. At the Owenacurra centre, the residents are familiar with the town centre. They can walk up and down the street. I have met and know...
