To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the projected number of asylum seekers which the state will be required to take under the solidarity mechanism of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact in each year from June 2026 to 2031; the projected financial contribution which the state will be required to make if it is not in a position to take these asylum seekers from 2026...

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Business of Joint Committee (27 May 2025)

Matt Carthy: I apologise for the slight delay. I was attending the Dáil debate that included the apology to Shane O'Farrell's family. I extend the committee's welcome for that long-overdue apology. Apologies have been received from Senators Lynn Ruane and Garret Kelleher. Senator Cathal Byrne is attending in substitution for Senator Kelleher. He is very welcome. I remind members to turn off...

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (27 May 2025)

Matt Carthy: I put you on the spot.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: 106. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government his proposals to increase the amount of polyethylene terephthalate, PET plastic recycled in Ireland. [30328/25]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: The deposit return scheme is well known to people, sometimes for the hassle of it and sometimes for the economic benefit of it. A huge proportion of the plastic that is collected under the scheme is shipped as waste plastic out of Ireland even though there is at least one company in this State that could manage quite a large part of the process. Is the Minister of State making efforts to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: It is regrettable that the figures the Minister of State gave a date from before the introduction of the deposit return scheme. The information I have is that by the end of this month, 17,000 tonnes of plastic will have been collected under the scheme but only 3,400 tonnes of that will have been brought to a factory in the State. I mentioned previously to the Tánaiste in the House that...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: I do not know how the Minister of State can say Ireland leads the way on plastics recycling when, in fact, we are leading the way in shipping those materials all over the world. We need to build capacity. As I mentioned, Shabra Plastics and Recycling can do a large part of the work and could do it all if it puts in a pellet production line. That would involve a huge investment, however,...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Infrastructure (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: I reaffirm everything Deputy O'Rourke said. The statement read by the Minister could have been read by every single Minister for the environment since 2006 when this project was mooted. Since 2006, Minister after Minister has devolved this issue entirely to EirGrid and said it was an operational matter and since 2006, EirGrid has made a mess of this. The Minister said he will not apportion...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Infrastructure (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: How many?

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Policing Matters: An Garda Síochána (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: Fáilte roimh uilig go léir. I have no recorded apologies at this time. I remind members to turn off their mobile phones or switch them to flight mode. The purpose of the meeting is to have an engagement with the Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, on policing matters. While we intend the engagement to focus on policing generally, we have also asked the Commissioner and his team...

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Policing Matters: An Garda Síochána (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: Go raibh maith agat. Before I open the floor to members, the Commissioner's own tenure in his post is coming to an end. We wish him well in his retirement and in whatever he does next. Is it a concern to him that, to use the euphemism, people do not appear to be lining up to replace him? One media article I saw stated that none of the serving assistant commissioners, who have spent their...

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Policing Matters: An Garda Síochána (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: Is the Commissioner aware of who will be on it?

Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: Policing Matters: An Garda Síochána (10 Jun 2025)

Matt Carthy: I am conscious many members wish to contribute, so I will only ask one question now. A key part of why we have the Commissioner here concerns recruitment and retention of members of An Garda Síochána. He mentioned a further cohort of gardaí passed out last week and that there were 6,700 applications. The information I saw indicated that about 120 people passed out last week.
