Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (23 Nov 2005)

John Dardis: I join with the Cathaoirleach in extending a welcome to our Swiss colleagues who are here today. Senators Brian Hayes, Ryan, Ó Murchú, Walsh, Maurice Hayes and Coonan raised the matter of Northern Ireland. I still believe we should have a debate on the wider aspects of the whole situation, particularly with regard to the restoration of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Northern Ireland...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (23 Nov 2005)

John Dardis: Senators Ryan and Kenneally spoke about the need for a health debate. Senator Kenneally raised the matter of oncology. The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, has always been amenable to discussing her brief in the Seanad. I am sure she will do so again, if requested, and we shall see if this can be done. As regards the report on the Shell pipeline raised by Senator...

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (30 Nov 2005)

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (30 Nov 2005)

John Dardis: We are all glad about it.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (30 Nov 2005)

John Dardis: I thank the Minister of State for what he said by which I am encouraged. We are all aware that alcohol is a significant factor in speeding. I recall that when the Road Traffic Bill was being discussed here alcohol was the predominant factor. The whole road signage system throughout the country has been discredited. Local authorities erect signs and never take them down. It gets to the point...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: I reject out of hand any comparison between Robert Mugabe and anything he might say about the security of the state and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: It is offensive to make that comparison. Senator Ryan reminds me of whatChurchill said about Baldwin, that he occasionally stumbled on the truth but, undaunted, he got up and carried on. It is incorrect to say that because the Minister believes something to be true that, therefore, he can say what he likes.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: He did not say what he liked. We all know the Minister has always been amenable to come into the House and staying in it to a degree that is highly unusual for a Cabinet Minister when dealing with legislation and going through it in great detail. I am sure he will do the same in respect of this matter. He is to make a statement in the Dáil and we should await what emerges from that...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: We used to pay that price all year round.

John Dardis: Was Senator Ross referring to the authority's reputation or his own reputation?

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2005: Second Stage. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: The Senator will have time to speak on Committee Stage.

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2005: Second Stage. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: Senator Coghlan is so entertaining we would like him to continue.

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2005: Second Stage. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: The Senator is trying to keep a paper mill in business.

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2005: Second Stage. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: I agree.

Seanad: Competition (Amendment) Bill 2005: Second Stage. (13 Dec 2005)

John Dardis: I welcome the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Martin, to the House. Some criticism has been made of the Bill that it is not a model of clarity. Certainly the Minister's opening statement was a model of clarity and simplicity in terms of explaining the need for the Bill and discarding some of the criticisms particularly in the area of predatory pricing. The Bill provides...
