Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Update on Rebuilding Ireland - Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Discussion (29 May 2019)

Pat Casey: My questions are specifically on the turnkey developments that both the local authorities and approved housing bodies are purchasing. I have some concerns that there is an over-reliance on it in specific areas because I know of some locations in my area where 100% of construction of housing is being purchased for turnkey developments for either approved housing bodies or the local authority....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Update on Rebuilding Ireland - Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Discussion (29 May 2019)

Pat Casey: This famous report. It is just a technicality, it mentions the words "ongoing", "on schedule" and "on time" and the colours and the descriptions are all the same. If it is completed there is no need to print it again. Maybe it could just be taken off because it is 42 pages.

Working Group of Committee Chairmen: Public Policy Matters: Discussion (30 May 2019)

Pat Casey: My question is not a priority for the Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government but it is probably a topical question in light of last week's events. At a recent committee meeting we had a detailed discussion on the importance of political research, the reasons behind voting and why people vote a given way. One of the key points was that political scientists had committed...

Working Group of Committee Chairmen: Public Policy Matters: Discussion (30 May 2019)

Pat Casey: Yes. I thank the Taoiseach for his answers. We might include something else in the research that relates to the Taoiseach's party in particular. I had to scrutinise a number of ballot papers over the weekend. Deputy Doyle was getting first preferences while Councillors Shay Cullen and Irene Winters were getting second and third preferences. I believe they lost 50 or 60 votes. From the...

Working Group of Committee Chairmen: Public Policy Matters: Discussion (30 May 2019)

Pat Casey: They switched from the European to the local ballot papers. There were quite a few spoiled votes because of that. Housing is a priority for the Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government. It is disappointing to see that the homeless figures have increased again. We are three years into this Government's term of office and into a continual rise in homelessness. While...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Family and Child Homelessness: Discussion (12 Jun 2019)

Pat Casey: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. During my three years as a Deputy, the issue that has come back to haunt us has been the complete failure to get to grips with this country's child homelessness problem. There has been a 90% increase in family homelessness and a 102% increase in child homelessness over that time. As I have said previously, I have witnessed child homelessness...
