- Other Questions: National Asset Management Agency (23 Oct 2012)
Dessie Ellis: Before last Christmas we were told that NAMA had identified 2,000 houses in this area but in the end approximately 68 were delivered, which was very poor. For various reasons houses and properties were ignored. Now 3,800 units have been identified. However, the Minister of State has given a breakdown of some that are unsuitable or have been withdrawn and consequently there now are...
- Other Questions: National Asset Management Agency (23 Oct 2012)
Dessie Ellis: I thank the Minister of State. One of the major problems we are facing relates to the fact that just over 100,000 people are in receipt of either rent subsidy or rent allowance. This has become part of the housing list, and people who are on the rental allowance scheme, RAS, are being taken off said list. Some people have been in receipt of rent subsidy for between seven and ten years....
- Topical Issue Debate: Unfinished Housing Developments (23 Oct 2012)
Dessie Ellis: Just over a week ago I visited the Gleann Riada estate to hear at first hand the concerns of residents. Gleann Riada estate is an isolated estate that is located approximately one mile outside Longford town and does not have public transport links. I was taken aback by the litany of problems encountered by residents. There are slightly more than 80 dwellings housing approximately 300 men,...
- Topical Issue Debate: Unfinished Housing Developments (23 Oct 2012)
Dessie Ellis: I do not blame the Government for what has happened in this case. It did not happen on this Government's watch but on the watch of a previous Government in recent years when there was a lack of regulations, control, checks and balances. This is a serious issue. The reports I have from people living in the estate as to what is happening, the state of some of the houses, and the fact that a...

Dessie Ellis: To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the concerns about the reliability of NCT testing due to the considerable pressure put on inspectors to carry out examinations of vehicles in a shorter time than is possible under normal circumstances; and the measures he intends to take to ensure that all procedures required for proper testing of vehicles...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Discussion with Irish Aviation Authority (24 Oct 2012)
Dessie Ellis: I thank the IAA for its presentation. One of the main issues with these proposed rules will allow for pilots to be on stand-by call for 22 hours a day. A pilot could be asked to fly even in difficult conditions. This can be extended by an hour in unforeseen events. We are aware that unforeseen events can happen often in the aviation industry. The employer can state the pilot’s...
- Order of Business (6 Nov 2012)
Dessie Ellis: The Taoiseach will be aware that Focus Ireland issued a report today on the rental supplement scheme. Rental supplement was cut in the most recent budget and may be cut further in the next one. HSE welfare officers have handled the administration of this matter.
- Order of Business (6 Nov 2012)
Dessie Ellis: The Minister has said that this will be passed over to local authorities, but when will this happen? When will the legislation be published? We need real reform and debate on the issue of rental subsidies. We are in danger of creating a new homeless cohort because landlords refuse to take on people. They also refuse to continue the rental supplement because of these cuts.
