- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits: Motion. (9 Nov 2005)
Mary White: Senator Ross told me last week that the Independent Senators would look after it for me. He said they would take it over and deal with it. However, I had better be diplomatic. I have a hill to climb. The flexible working Bill is one of the propositions in my child care document. As happens in the UK, we should have legislation whereby a parent with a child under six years old or a disabled...

Mary White: If I am not allowed, I will give it to the Senator.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits: Motion. (9 Nov 2005)
Mary White: If it does not, I will give the Bill to the Senator.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits: Motion. (9 Nov 2005)
Mary White: The Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Killeen, is 100% supportive.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to urgently explain to the House why speed limits are not being obeyed throughout the country. Last week I drove to Athlone to give a speech on women in business. All the way there, I saw that every speed limit was broken, including those in the towns and villages I passed through. We are a laughing stock. Every weekend people are...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)
Mary White: The rules of the road and speed limits are in place but they are not being implemented. Drivers know that nobody will catch them. The number of road deaths is at a crisis level.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I include the influence of alcohol in this regard. When one travels abroad, one does not see the blatant, in-your-face advertisements for alcohol one sees in Ireland. I went to a soccer match in Madrid at the weekend.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)
Mary White: It is a very serious issue. I am seeking a debate on alcohol and its effect on road deaths.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I was supporting Madrid; I was for Beckham.
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State and his departmental colleagues to the House. In answer to Senator Finucane, is the Government supposed to run the health service on a daily basis and micro-manage it? That is not the job of the Government. I do not know what he is talking about.
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: You saidââ
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I apologise.
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: The Senator spoke about the waste of money. I do not know how he could say that. He also said the Government should be micro-managing organisations and that his region has had no foreign direct investment since 1991. As I have said before to the Senator and his colleagues from Waterford, why do they not put pressure on the IDA to get international investment to their counties?
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I drive around the country and see the lack of infrastructure in certain places. People always blame their local Deputy or Senator when their part of the country is not doing well. I wish to address the topics of the cervical cancer screening programme, child care, pensions, manufacturing industries and the care of the elderly but I will first refer to Senator Quinn's remarks. There is much...
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: To help manufacturers survive, the Irish Exporters Association â my nominating body to the Seanad â is calling for a major reinvestment in automation equipment in order to overcome the rising labour, energy and administration costs of operating in Ireland. This can only be achieved by a major capital grant aid scheme, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. There is a need...
- Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30. (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: Senator Hayes should go back to being a teacher.
- Seanad: Estimates for Public Services 2006: Statements (Resumed). (24 Nov 2005)
Mary White: There is a need for a debate in the Seanad on employment, even though there is virtually no unemployment, because we must look to the future. A business will not survive unless it is constantly innovating, day and night. We cannot presume that the current level of unemployment, at 4%, will remain. On the total pre-budget Estimates figure of â¬48 billion, I would plead with the Minister of...
- Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (30 Nov 2005)
Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State and this debate, which I called for some weeks ago. Yesterday, the report of the annual national survey of motorists' behaviour and attitudes to road safety was published. The survey of 1,100 drivers nationwide was carried out by the Smurfit business school, UCD, in partnership with FBD Insurance and Advance Pitstop. It provides startling and eye-opening...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Dec 2005)
Mary White: I reassure Senator Norris that American troops will begin to be withdrawn next year when the congressional elections will take place and will be fully out of Iraq in three years' time when the presidential election is approaching. I can already see a move in beginning to admit the war of deceit has failed and has been a total disaster. I also support Senator Norris's calls for an immediate...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Dec 2005)
Mary White: No way. The Senator must be joking.
