- Seanad: Water Safety (23 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for her response, the tenor of which I anticipated. I would have thought Waterways Ireland would be responsible for providing rescue services on our lakes. I ask her to bring this matter to the attention of the Minister, Deputy Pat Carey, who might then discuss it with the Minister for Transport, Deputy Noel Dempsey. I intend to contact the former because...
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: She has not agreed to come yet.
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Or a stag hunt.
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Where is the Climate Change Bill?
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I rise to extend my sympathy to the Corbally family. Valuable life was wasted in cold blood. I commend the Garda Commissioner, Mr. Fachtna Murphy, on the sensitive way in which he spoke during the lunchtime news about the two young men's families and the teenager badly injured in the back of the car. I question how the good, honest and decent people of Neilstown in the Clondalkin area are...
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Well said.
- Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I refer to the serious rise in the incidence of suicide, as documented in the report yesterday, and ask the Leader for a debate on the matter. Perhaps we could include it in a debate when the Minister for Health and Children comes to the House. Funding for suicide prevention measures has been cut dramatically. There has been a 24% increase in the incidence of suicide. Last year 424 people...
- Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: -----and how people are able to conduct and manage their lives due to not having a job and job insecurity. I urge Members to participate in the suicide assist programme which is useful. It is a suicide first aid course. I have done it and would highly recommend it. One is equipped to deal with people. In our daily work we meet many people who are down on their luck. One could ascertain...
- Seanad: Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I welcome the Minister and thank her for her attendance. I compliment her on the legislation dealing with sunbeds, which is very worthwhile.
- Seanad: Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: More preventive measures such as this might save massive amounts of money. The number of items dispensed under the GMS and long-term illness schemes increased from 35 million in 2004 to 48.2 million in 2008, a very significant number. Like other Members, I accept that we are in very challenging economic times, but a 50 cent charge per prescription item, subject to a monthly ceiling of â¬10...
- Seanad: Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Senator Fitzgerald referred to reference pricing and the cost of generic drugs. Senator Feeney made a good point about GPs being mandated to prescribe a generic drug alternative, as should pharmacies, rather than the more expensive branded drugs. I am in favour of monitoring repeat prescriptions. People have massive quantities of medications in their homes which are returned when, sadly, a...
- Seanad: Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: That would be a little difficult.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I wish Senator Ellis luck. If I were him, I would not hold my breath if the Athlone experience is any guide.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: The Senator is in Government, I suppose. I thank the Minister for attending. This issue relates to the provision of a travel pass for a 19 year old insulin dependent diabetic. This young man is attending a course in Dún Laoghaire College of Further Education. While attending the course he became very unwell, with his diabetes becoming unstable and out of control. He had to go to...
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I am disappointed with the reply. As the Minister of State said, the idea is to keep people mobile and independent. This is, therefore, a reasonable request. I understand the Minister cannot make law for one person, but I have also been contacted by the Diabetic Association of Ireland and there are a number of young people in this position. They no longer have anybody caring for them...
- Seanad: Social Welfare Benefits (30 Jun 2010)
Nicky McFadden: He will still not have a travel pass. She will but he will not.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jul 2010)
Nicky McFadden: The recession is at an end and this is to be welcomed. Sadly, we are in for a long period of growth in the numbers unemployed. The new live register figures reveal that 452,882 people are out of work. Unemployment has risen to a staggering 13.4%. I accuse the Fianna Fáil and Green parties of having no jobs strategy.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jul 2010)
Nicky McFadden: Yesterday the House witnessed the appalling self-congratulatory exercise of the Government's Private Members' motion, in which the Government complimented itself on introducing our policy of exempting employers from PRSI, with the highest number of people unemployed and the staggering rate of suicide, as was mentioned yesterday, with 527 poor unfortunate people losing their lives to suicide...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jul 2010)
Nicky McFadden: I apologise, I meant to say 600 jobs. I thank the Leader for the correction.
