- Seanad: Use of Irish Airports: Motion. (8 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: There is a question about the role of the Garda. Senator Norris said he was informed by senior members of the Garda that they do not have jurisdiction to board the airplanes in question. The Minister has stated categorically that is not the case. That question must be clarified with the senior gardaà because I would have thought senior members of the Garda would be au fait with the law of...
- Seanad: Use of Irish Airports: Motion. (8 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I am very surprised by that. I am not anti-American, nor are almost all of the speakers on this side of the House, but we expect America, the same as any other nation, to comply with international law at all times. There are no exceptions in that regard. We cannot close our eyes to reality, as was mentioned by Senator Quinn. We must investigate matters about which there is public concern....
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I support Senator Brian Hayes and other speakers in respect of their call for a debate on the accident and emergency issue. How many more people must lie on trolleys before the reforms kick in? The establishment of another task force is a typical example of government by committee. As far as this Government is concerned, the paralysis has already set in. I also support Senator O'Toole's Bill....

Maurice Cummins: That the owner died.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I join with Senator O'Toole and other Members regarding the amount of freight being diverted from rail to road, as it is a matter of concern. I worked in the shipping and transport business for a number of years. While liner trains once went from Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Sligo and Belfast to Waterford Port nightly, practically none does now. CIE does not seem to be making an effort to keep...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (28 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: When is it intended to introduce the new gaming and lottery Bill, which has been on the Government's legislative programme for the past three years? While an interdepartmental report was made in 2000, no action has been taken and it does not appear to be coming before either House of the Oireachtas. What is the reason for the delay and when will it come before this House? Private member card...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (30 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: The amendments are self-explanatory. They are technical amendments and we agree with them.
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (30 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: It makes eminent sense that we get the views of the Irish Bankers Federation on items such as this one. There is little use having legislation in theory that will not operate in practice. I agree with the amendments as proposed by the Government.
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (30 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I move amendment No. 20: In page 32, between lines 21 and 22, to insert the following new subsection: "(10) All documentation comprising the notification to member states of interception shall be treated as official documents relating to an authorisation, or the application therefor, for the purposes of the Act of 1993, and the provisions of section 8 of the Act of 1993 shall apply.". One of...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (30 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: A number of the Minister's predecessors could not stand over their transactions and that is what we are trying to protect against.
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (30 Mar 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister's comments and I appreciate the difficulties involved. We do not wish to obstruct mutual assistance in any way but safeguards should be incorporated, if possible, within the legislation. I look forward to the Minister's proposal in this regard on Report Stage, although I do not know whether that will be possible. Hopefully, something can be done to address the amendments.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Apr 2006)
Maurice Cummins: Gun crime, particularly drug-related gun crime, seems to be out of control in the country. Last week we discussed the shootings on the M50, and over the weekend another young man was shot in Clonmel. Nothing seems to get done on the issue. Security vans are rammed and vast amounts of money are taken, and it is estimated that less than 10% of the money taken in all these robberies over the...

Maurice Cummins: Ba mhaith liom fÃorchaoin fáilte a chur roimh an Aire. I wish to share time with Senator Browne.
- Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)
Maurice Cummins: I found myself agreeing with much of what the Minister said but she totally misrepresented the meaning of the Fine Gael policies. I do not think she can substantiate anything she has said about the removal of compulsion in the teaching of the Irish language leading to the demise of the language. It is nonsense. Recently I met a friend of mine who is a fluent Irish speaker. He has a great love...
