Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Government consumption seems very low but there you are. You mentioned why you were predicting a lower growth rate for 2015 down from 4.7% to 3.6%. Would you recap on that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Mr. McCarthy mentioned in regard to the 4.7% that the bulk of it was comprised of growth in domestic demand as opposed to the healthy exports which are clearly there. Therefore, the domestic economy's recovery is more relevant than the export market to the improvement in domestic demand. In relation to our eurozone partners and their impact on our growth, to what extent do you feel that the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I was very interested in a number of your responses on the construction sector. I noticed in your charts that it seems particularly volatile over Q2 and Q3 of 2013 and Q2 of 2014. What do you think is contributing to that volatility?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Particularly as we are looking towards construction as an area that will feed demand and therefore feed into the growth for next year, it would be important to note that it is a particularly volatile sector.

Aideen Hayden: We are at about 6%.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Yes, but it depends on the GNP-GDP figure.

Aideen Hayden: I thank the delegates.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Does it include repayments on the debt?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Budget 2015: Department of Finance (7 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Mr. McCarthy is correct. There has been a rumour that we might reach a figure of 2.9% this year. I said this because I wanted to see if the officials would smile.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I have no comment to make about who does or does not attend a breakfast for any reason, but I would point out that it is thanks to the Government that we have robust legislation on political donations and their declaration and that we have openness and transparency in political life.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I wish to respond to some of the comments made by Senator O'Donnell in regard to the Governor of the Central Bank and the mortgage market. I agree with her that we need a robust debate on the banking sector and I have called for that on a number of occasions. We cannot go back to the way things were. There is no alternative now for people on low incomes such as there was back in the 1970s...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: No. I said the opposite.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Yes, I do. I said the exact opposite.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I said that we need a debate on banking because we do not have alternatives any more.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: We have no alternatives and therefore the only thing we can do is challenge the main lending institutions. They are the only game in town and, therefore, we must challenge whatever they say robustly.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I welcome the announcement that talks are taking place with the EIB on co-funding social housing. We have had a number of reports this week which have focused on housing generally and social housing in particular. On Tuesday, the Governor of the Central Bank opened a consultation process on proposals to restrict mortgage lending. We also had Dublin City Council announce that social housing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Rule of Law in the European Union: (Resumed) Ambassador of Hungary (9 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: I noted in the ambassador's presentation that Hungary was the last country among the central and eastern European states to introduce a new constitution after the transition and the profound global changes in the period 1989 to 1990. One question relates to the historical reasons that may be so in terms of Hungary. The ambassador was quoted in an RTE interview as saying many people believe...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Rule of Law in the European Union: (Resumed) Ambassador of Hungary (9 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: The ultimate question is whether Hungary thinks the Tavares report was fair.

Seanad: Budget 2015: Statements (14 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Could the Acting Chairman tell me when I have two minutes to go so I can ensure I make some of the points I absolutely want to make?

Seanad: Budget 2015: Statements (14 Oct 2014)

Aideen Hayden: Senator O'Brien was talking about the measures that needed to be put in place to protect society. In case he has forgotten, since 2008, under his party's Government, this country lost 250,000 jobs.
