Clare Daly: 132. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his plans to adopt a similar strategy to Norway in order to close Ireland's three licenced mink fur farms in view of the fact that the Norwegian authorities have recently announced a strategy to close down that country's 300 fur farms by 2023. [3630/18]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017: Discussion (24 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: I thank the witnesses for being here today. In some ways this is so obvious there is almost nothing to say. I do not mean that in a derogatory sense. Everybody would agree that this discrimination has existed from time immemorial. We all know that people who come from particular areas feel they cannot disclose it because it will result in their being treated less favourably. It is almost...
- Other Questions: Arms Trade (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: 7. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if his attention has been drawn to the suspension by Norway of arms sales to the UAE; and if he will discuss this suspension with his EU counterparts with a view to agreeing to pursue a similar EU wide suspension of arms sales to the UAE and other members of the Saudi led coalition attacking Yemen. [3665/18]
- Other Questions: Arms Trade (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: In December of last year, Norway suspended exports of munitions and arms to the United Arab Emirates, UAE, as a precaution because of its concern over the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, not because of any of its military exports had actually been used. When we raised this issue before, the then Minister, Deputy Frances Fitzgerald, referred to trade missions and all the rest of it. That is...
- Other Questions: Arms Trade (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: The Minister is correct that all sides need to sit down and negotiate a political solution but that will not happen without some serious arm-twisting. The European Union has the power to do that. The Minister, as a representative of a small, neutral country, has an opportunity to be at the forefront in advocating a suspension of arms sales to the region. I appreciate that the Minister...
- Other Questions: Arms Trade (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: All I am asking the Minister to do is to discuss these issues and raise the issue of a suspension of arms sales with his counterparts in the EU. I do not believe that is unreasonable. What I find incredible is the contradiction in policy. We know that war crimes have been committed in that area. We have more than enough evidence to go on in terms of the appalling humanitarian crisis that...
- Other Questions: International Sanctions Application (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: On a point of order, I would like to correct the record. The Minister stated Ireland does not have an arms industry. In 2016, arms sales from Ireland amounted to €60 million and we sold arms to a value of €3.5 million to the UAE. I did not correct the Minister when I spoke and I would like that matter corrected.
- Topical Issue Debate: Aer Lingus Staff (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: When Fine Gael and Labour took the very short-sighted step of selling the State's remaining shareholding in our national airline in 2015, we were told unambiguously that the jobs and conditions of Aer Lingus workers would be protected. We were told at the time by the Minister's predecessor, Deputy Paschal Donohoe:I want to assure the House that IAG has confirmed that existing employment...
- Topical Issue Debate: Aer Lingus Staff (25 Jan 2018)
Clare Daly: This is an incredibly important discussion, not least for the people whose livelihoods have been jeopardised. I fully accept the point made by the Minister that IAG made no legally-binding commitments at the time. It is a point I made in the Chamber when the deal was done, but the problem is that the Government parties at the time, namely, Fine Gael and the Labour Party, sold them, in this...
