Colm Burke: Are we putting in enough effort to make staff in nursing homes more aware of and involved in assisting those residents who have hearing loss? Could we be doing much more in this area? We focus very much on the nursing care aspect of nursing homes, but I am not sure if we focus as much on sight and hearing issues in this context.

Colm Burke: I thank Dr. Hickey for her presentation. I fully understand that it is a challenging area for parents to deal with but also for the people who have the medical condition. Regarding the issue of mental health, it is not only the person who has the condition but also I presume the immediate family needs that mental health support.

We are talking about people right across the entire country from Kerry to Donegal. The problem then is that if you focus on one person, people are at a disadvantage if they are in another part of the country.
