- Topical Issue Debate: Flood Alleviation (10 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: We have seen on television and on the ground the devastation being caused by the floods. People's hearts have been broken. The River Suck drainage committee was disbanded more than a year ago, meaning that 30 or 40 people employed in the committee have not been doing any work to prevent flooding. The scheme was sponsored by Galway and Roscommon county councils. The rivers in most...
- Topical Issue Debate: Flood Alleviation (10 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. It is the first sign of positivity I have seen since coming in here. At least the Minister of State recognises and understands the problem. We have a problem in Europe for the simple reason that the water framework directive is hitting the habitats directive head-on. We could have the best will in the world and the greatest people in the...
- Leaders' Questions (15 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: In the past few weeks we have witnessed the devastation caused by flooding in many areas throughout the country. In the past week I attended two meetings with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on the drawing up of new maps, which process I have discovered to my horror is not being carried out in local offices, which is rather unusual. I welcome the €5 million...
- Leaders' Questions (15 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: We are coming to the season of goodwill so I ask the Taoiseach to clarify two simple issues for me. Will the Red Cross scheme cover farmers that have lost fodder or whose slatted sheds have been damaged given they are classed, in the Taoiseach's own words, as a business?
- Leaders' Questions (15 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Are the people with septic tanks, affected by regulations introduced in 2011, covered? We are well aware of the protests at the time about registering septic tanks. The people who registered are now being refused payment by councils because the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government is saying they are not entitled to the money as they are not in the 5% category. Will...

[44964/15]
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education and Training Boards Staff (15 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: 555. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills in respect of the rates of pay for casual and part-time teachers in secondary schools who are employed on an ad hoc basis depending on the immediate requirements of a specific school, if it is commonplace for such teachers to be employed as substitutes in more than one school in any academic year, whether it be a school run by an education and...

[45420/15]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank Mr. O'Sullivan for his presentation. He said he was rolling out 70 new stations. From what he has said, I believe it is a four, five or six year project.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Therefore, we are looking at 12 per year. Would that be correct?

Michael Fitzmaurice: Does Mr. O'Sullivan have a plan or schedule?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Yes, but does Mr. O'Sullivan have them lined out for 2016, 2017 and 2018? Where will they be?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Hold on now and let us be clear on this. That is not a five-year or six-year plan. Unless I am very wrong, we are in 2015 at the moment.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Yes, so it is not five years or six years, as was said earlier.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Am I correct in saying most of the emphasis should be put on the bus and lorry fleet market? In some cities a certain number of cars can be handled, but with the best will in the world, if there were 70 cars in total, there would be at most two or three in a county and we would not have that number for another five to seven years. Is that correct?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Additional Uses of Natural Gas: Gas Networks Ireland (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Fitzmaurice: For example, if I have my Volkswagen Caddy in Galway which is 100 miles across from one end to the other, I am not going to drive 50 miles for a refill when I can buy diesel in the shop one mile down the road. Is it correct to say Gas Networks Ireland is going to target the fleets of lorries and buses that are travelling the country?
