Seanad: Hospital Services. (16 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: I wish to give a minute of my time to Senator Cummins.

Seanad: Hospital Services. (16 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and am pleased to raise this issue because on many occasions in this House I looked for a radiotherapy unit to be set up in Limerick. I was therefore delighted that the unit opened in Limerick Regional Hospital on 27 October. In the past, patients in need of radiotherapy had to travel long distances, especially to Dublin, for treatment. This...

Seanad: Hospital Services. (16 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: The Minister of State used the word "speedy" in the context of the Estimates. Does he expect the matter to be resolved by January 2006?

Seanad: Hospital Services. (16 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: As the Minister of State is a Limerick man, I am sure he wants to resolve this matter.

Seanad: Order of Business. (17 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: I support Senator O'Toole's comments about wind energy. The Government made a commitment to meet over 13% of our energy needs by wind power, which is classified as "green energy", by 2010. There has been much discussion about wind energy but enthusiastic promoters of it who are prepared to enter the business at considerable expense face prohibitive charges when trying to gain access to the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: I also read the Sunday newspaper that outlined the top 200 schools based on the criterion of what percentage of their pupils went to universities. What struck me was Senator Mansergh's comments on this article's creation of a type of snobbery. In the reality of modern Ireland, approximately 40% of all jobs are created in the building industry. Regarding crafts and the recent skills document,...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: I welcome the recent expansion of the apprenticeship concept as these are the types of skills required. I assure the House that there are people in the crafts area who earn far more money in the marketplace than many people with PhDs, those in universities and so on.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: This type of publicity in respect of leagues is erroneous as it depends on what percentage of pupils go on to attend universities. I appreciate that many schools are so broad based that they absorb the people who wish to go into the skilled areas in the marketplace where jobs exist. The reality is that it is often quite difficult to get jobs based on degrees.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: Charlie McCreevy's friend was not very nice.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: As we are well aware, the Rossport five were jailed for 94 days. It is interesting that now an expert consultant has raised serious concerns about the safety of the pipeline running close to houses. Another disturbing issue which has emerged is that in 2003 the senior executives of Shell who were concerned about the ongoing delay in the planning process had an emergency meeting with the...

Seanad: Railway Safety Bill 2001: Report and Final Stages. (23 Nov 2005)

Michael Finucane: Before we begin, I remind the House that a Senator may speak only once on Report Stage, except the proposer of an amendment, who may reply to the discussion on the amendment. On Report Stage, each amendment must be seconded.
