Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Úsáid na Gaeilge i dTithe an Oireachtais: Ard Rúnaí, Seirbhís Thithe an Oireachtais (23 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: An féidir liom soiléiriú a fháil ar an cheist sin? With regard to what Mr. Finnegan was saying about subtitles, if I am watching a movie on Netflix I can set the subtitles to French or whatever language I want. If one is watching the news one can choose different subtitles. Is that what Mr. Finnegan is talking about? In other words-----

Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Úsáid na Gaeilge i dTithe an Oireachtais: Ard Rúnaí, Seirbhís Thithe an Oireachtais (23 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: I do not know what technology is involved, but if one is watching live news in different languages, as I sometimes do, the captions come on. I do not if that could be done le haghaidh an Gaeilge or what it would cost to do, even if only for Leader's Questions or something like that. Cad a chosnódh sé chun go mbeadh an Gaeilge ann ag an am céanna? I do not know an bhfuil...

Fergus O'Dowd: Of course. Aontaím leis sin. I appreciate he cannot do it today, but could Mr. Finnegan come back to us with that information?

Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Úsáid na Gaeilge i dTithe an Oireachtais: Ard Rúnaí, Seirbhís Thithe an Oireachtais (23 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: It is phonetic analysis of the sound. It will not always be correct. One gets real howlers in there, but that might be a bit of fun. They can do it on any channel.

Fergus O'Dowd: Agus beidh sí ann ina dhiaidh freisin.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: Apologies have been received from Senator Ned O'Sullivan. Before we proceed I ask that members turn off their mobile phones or switch them to silent mode. I propose that we go into private session to deal with some housekeeping matters. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: Before we commence I must turn to matters relating to EU scrutiny following on from last week's meetings. The proposals listed in schedule A COM (2017) 648 were discussed in full but I reiterate them here for the purposes of transparency. It is proposed there are no subsidiarity concerns with this proposal and that this proposal warrants further scrutiny. It is further proposed to request...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: We will now engage with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, to discuss three matters. We will deal with them in the order listed: unopened motorway service stops, the reduction in the budget for maintaining national roads and tolling issues on the M1. I welcome Mr. Michael Nolan, chief executive, Mr. Peter Walsh, director of capital programmes, Mr. Nigel O'Neill, director of commercial...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: We will deal with the first and second items separately. I welcome Mr. Nolan. Significant issues have been raised regarding the operation of TII and its activities, particularly the fact that so much public money is being spent. I think over €1 million was expended, which Mr. Nolan itemised, between the legal costs and other costs. Not one cup of tea was sold or one bar of chocolate...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: It has cost a lot of money; €1 million has been spent so far.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: Why does TII not open it? Mr. Nolan is talking about another four month delay if I understand correctly what he is saying. It seems to me the public need would be met by opening it up immediately. Why does TII not do that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: It is an appalling waste of money. I appreciate that TII did not initiate the legal process but it has been extremely expensive as TII is paying over €500,000 in legal costs. It is an appalling vista and is absolutely unacceptable. Following today's meeting we will need to invite TII here again to discuss its annual report and other issues such as that TII seems to penalise...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: Yes. I am in the hands of the members but I am very concerned about that. I welcome the witnesses' presence here today but there are huge problems around TII's operation. It is a huge company with a turnover of over €1 billion a year but the taxpayer is not getting value for money. The driver is being penalised if he is compliant.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (24 Jan 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: I want to deal with the Drogheda issue first, if I may. I would like the Deputy to ask her question about Drogheda after I give her some information she does not have. If she wishes to go ahead now that is fine.
