- Competition (Amendment) Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Second Stage [Private Members] (28 Feb 2017)
Bríd Smith: We welcome the Bill as an attempt to address a growing problem, that is, the use of bogus self-employment contracts and definitions that will stop workers from accessing rights and using legislation that is supposed to be there to protect workers. It seeks to ensure that anti-competitive laws are not used against groups of workers who are deemed to be self-employed. I am not sure it will...

- Other Questions: Junior Cycle Reform (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I would like to ask the Minister about the relegation of history as a distinct subject in the junior certificate cycle, and if he thinks it will help his action plan in education. The relegation of history is not being warmly welcomed by historians or teachers. There is much doubt about what he is attempting to do. I would like the Minister to comment on his plans and children's futures in...
- Other Questions: Junior Cycle Reform (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I would like to take issue with what the Minister has just said. Britain is reinstating history as a separate subject and one that is mandatory because it has learned from its recent history that it is not serving the purpose it set out to serve. Somebody famously said those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. If one takes that statement as having any meaning, it...
- Other Questions: Junior Cycle Reform (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I do not think it was compulsory. Rather, it was mandatory.
- Other Questions: Junior Cycle Reform (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: That is not the whole story. There is a trend in the modern world to downgrade arts subjects, which is true in colleges. Education is being geared at third level, something which is probably seeping down to second level, towards providing industry with the sort of workers that it needs rather than developing the intellectual capacity of human beings regardless of their age or level of...

- Traveller Ethnicity: Statements (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I have spent the past half hour out at the gates, where there are approximately 150 to 200 Travellers who have come from all over Ireland to witness this historic occasion. It is unusual. The AV room and Gallery are full. They have been patient, having been outside for hours, and they are excited about this most historic occasion in the life of their community. Would anyone blame them? ...

- Traveller Ethnicity: Statements (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I would love to hear the Taoiseach but so would the people outside. There are 25 people from Labra Park in Ballyfermot. I am willing and I am sure Deputy Ó Snodaigh would also be willing-----

Bríd Smith: If there is a shortage of staff I am willing to do that and other Deputies are willing.
- Traveller Ethnicity: Statements (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: I am not being facile. We should bend the rules for people who have had the rules broken on them for decades in this country.
- Traveller Ethnicity: Statements (1 Mar 2017)
Bríd Smith: For the record, because of the points I made earlier, I make it clear that I bear no animosity towards the staff of the building. I have 1,000% respect for them, as do all my colleagues. It was not about the staff. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances which meant at least 100, if not more, Travellers and their children were excluded from this celebration and I really do regret this....
