Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Retail Sector (7 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: County Clare is a good example. Friends of mine live in Scarriff and Kilrush and these are examples I give the Minister of State of towns that are dying on their feet. Scarriff is down to a single main street retailer. The risk is that this will happen in every single Irish town, that we will be left with one multiple outlet. While these are good businesses, typically run by local...

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Air Corps Recruitment (7 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: 65. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence the structures in place within the Air Corps with regard to the relative promotional prospects of officers with continued service and recommissioned officers following the recent scheme intended to attract former officers. [11313/19]

Tributes on Retirement of Member of Staff (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: There is a tradition I like where we, on entering or leaving this Chamber, nod, bow or whatever - various versions thereof - to the Chair. I think it is not only to the Chair. It is to the civil servants in front of the Ceann Comhairle as well. We do not have a mace in this House. Our mace is those screens, that rule book and those Standing Orders on the desk in front of Patricia and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte: Chairperson Designate (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I thank the Chairman. I am not a member of the committee but I am very glad to be able to come here to put a couple of questions to Ms Gray. I know her from her previous work as chair of EirGrid. I cannot think of a better person to take on the role at Coillte. Her record and the work I have seen her do for the State are exemplary. The way she managed EirGrid and other companies, her...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte: Chairperson Designate (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: In the past, people asked why we needed three or four companies involved in a new venture. I think we need every company to be involved. They are separate and I do not think we should be merging Coillte and Bord na Móna. They involve different skills. However, combining their skills with those of the ESB and our gas network makes sense.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte: Chairperson Designate (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: If I may follow on from Senator Lombard's remarks, it is going to require different economics. If we are going towards 100-year forestry, which in my mind we are, it is a different model. There will be income streams from the thinnings and the management of it. We may have to pay. The way things are going in Europe and elsewhere is to have recognition of that and payment systems...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte: Chairperson Designate (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: On that point, is Coillte's expertise in parks? Might it be best to get the National Parks and Wildlife Service to manage and run some of that? It may have expertise that Coillte might not have.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte: Chairperson Designate (12 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: The National Parks and Wildlife Service does not have enough resources at the moment but if it did, it might be a good co-operation partner.

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: It is ladies first usually but we will make an exception today.

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: Deputy Fitzmaurice is also contributing in this slot.

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: If it is possible, we might-----

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I will take less than that. Deputy Shortall will take the majority of the time. I was very pleased to be able to attend the briefing in the AV Room yesterday where Plan International and Homeless Period Ireland explained this issue. I needed to have it explained to me. I was glad that it was done and I am very glad that we are having this debate. To refer to Deputy Harty's comment, I am...

Recent Developments on Brexit: Statements (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I wish to share time with Deputy Shortall.

Recent Developments on Brexit: Statements (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I am glad the amendment has just been passed in the House of Commons, despite the vote being so tight, because it provides clarity and there is less chance of a no-deal, crash-out Brexit at the end of the month. There is still real concern as it still gives no real clarity on the ultimate solution to this major crisis being experienced by the UK political system. I have a couple of...

Written Answers — Department of Health: National Children's Hospital (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: 56. To ask the Minister for Health the professional fees agreed in the 2014 contract with regard to the national children’s hospital; and the estimated cost of the provision of the services in the present economic circumstances. [10619/19]

Eamon Ryan: 290. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the number of houses that availed of the deep retrofit grant assistance as managed by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland in 2018; and the overall budget spend in grant support for such projects. [12545/19]

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Scrutiny of European Commission Country Report Ireland 2019 and European Semester (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I thank Mr. Martínez Mongay for coming in with his country report. I seem to recall that he was here last year. This is very much appreciated as a useful part of our process. I have a slight difficulty because I might be repeating some of the things I said last year. That is the nature of politics. My particular problem is that when I go home to my beloved wife this evening - it...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Scrutiny of European Commission Country Report Ireland 2019 and European Semester (13 Mar 2019)

Eamon Ryan: I have a problem. I think the Commission is flagging that. I think the Commission wants to pursue and promote certain policies. I agree fully with Mr. Martínez Mongay that we should not interfere in the choices of individuals. Every family and every situation is different. I would be in no way judgmental, although that language is judgmental against my wife. The Commission should...
