Seanad: Employees (Provision of Information and Consultation) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (12 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I reluctantly agree in this instance.

Seanad: Employees (Provision of Information and Consultation) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (12 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Senator Quinn's argument makes total sense. I am sure Senators McDowell and O'Toole, who know more than me about such matters, would not disagree with the proposed definition of a "trade union". Senator Quinn is right to ask for a definition of the word "undertaking" to be included in the Bill. While it is not defined in the Bill, I understand the word is defined in the relevant EU directive....

Paul Coghlan: I agree with Senator Quinn on this point.

Seanad: Employees (Provision of Information and Consultation) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (12 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister of State is a reasonable man. We will agree to his amendment.

Seanad: Employees (Provision of Information and Consultation) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (12 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I do not see anything wrong with direct consultation. There is no conflict between what Senators Quinn and O'Toole said because employees can consult one another about who they want as their representative. It is quite reasonable that the employer should arrange for the election of the employees' representative. Employees might come together and appoint from among themselves without an...

Seanad: Employees (Provision of Information and Consultation) Bill 2005: Committee Stage. (12 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: In large companies with the considerable numbers of employees to which Senator Quinn referred, the proposal that the number should be increased, that it would not be an unrepresentative minority or that the measure would not be open to mischievous abuse, would be worthy of consideration by the Minister of State. I wish to hear the Minister of State's view on that matter.

Paul Coghlan: This is really only in place if the need arises.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The Senator's concern is touching.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: On that last point, practically all Members would support any move and nothing discriminatory should be permitted. As the Senator has remarked, people employed by local authorities rightfully earn pensions and councillors should not be treated differently for their long service. Yesterday, I raised a question on staged payments to which the Leader inadvertently failed to respond. The point I...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The Senator should come home. All is forgiven.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I would like the Leader to respond on the status of the proposed transfer from the Dublin Airport Authority to Fáilte Ireland of the Great Southern Hotel group, which is believed to be nominally worth €100 million. Senior DAA executives have been in communication in the recent past with the Departments of Transport, Arts, Sport and Tourism and the Taoiseach. Last March the chairman of the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: It is very important to have a response before the Leader goes to Killarney this weekend.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The red carpet will be rolled out for her. All Members would be most welcome; we need all the visitors we can get in Killarney. Despite reports to the contrary, the season has not been as good as we would have wished. The Leader knows how serious this is; she has appointed board members in the past and the matter is close to her heart.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I want to hear from the Government side on the status of the proposed transfer.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Everybody is most welcome.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)

Seanad: Plant Diseases. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Environment and Local Government, Deputy Batt O'Keeffe. I look forward to learning more from him than I can impart on this subject. Phytophthora ramorum is a deadly fungus, causing sudden death.

Seanad: Plant Diseases. (19 Oct 2005)

Paul Coghlan: From a discussion I had with him earlier I know the Minister of State is well aware of this matter and well briefed.
